Found this artifact at a 1775 Rev war site. Looks like a British crown and there is some lettering, ?RST IMPROVR? Not sure if I got all the letters correct, but any ideas what these letters could mean? I believe this is a tip to a cane. :icon_scratch: 006.JPG010.JPG013.JPG014.JPG015.JPG016.JPG017.JPG007.JPG

What does tag mean?

Why does it say I have 16 replies but only shows 10?

I think it might say "BEST IMPROVED"

Question:
What type of metal and what does the pointed end look like?

Have you tried to remove the screw?

Can you wrap a small piece of paper around it and make a rubbing with graphite or crayon?

Hey G, This may be really off the wall, but it reminds me of a Samurai 'like' sword handle. Is that wood down in it? Do you think the tip of any type of walking stick would have a neck flange that wide? Breezie

G, After doing some research, I believe it to be a ferrule from a walking stick/cane. In the last pic you posted, it shows a horizontal metal bar which is typical of ferrule attachments as you can see from my attached pic. The engraving has an Asian look to me.

Here is a website with some good information about antique walking sticks.

This one really intrigued me for some reason.

Your post was very helpful as I thought the "horizontal metal bar" was a slot for a flathead screwdriver, but I was clearly wrong.

I'm pretty sure this is indeed an umbrella tip (as Taz42o suggested earlier) because of a description of an item in the collection of a British museum:

"Umbrella, with small ivory handles, a pressed metal collar, decorated and stamped with a crown and legend 'Best Improved.' With a metal ferrule and cloth cover."

Sadly there isn't a photo, here is the link: Search Results - Hull Museums Collections

Great job Pyrate and Taz. You nailed the ID! :icon_thumleft: After looking at the horizontal metal bar, I knew it had to be used for attachment to a rod of some sort, so my thoughts were with a walking cane. Again, G, neat find, Breezie
