Where I hunt we have a lot of eastern stemmed points. Bare island newmanstown poplar island patuxant etc... These points range from 5000 no to about 1500 bc. Most I pick up have normal blade edges on them even with resharping. Every once in a while ill grab one with a beveled edge like yesterday. Am I correct in saying that this style of point would fall in the early years of this type? Also a lot of the points I'm finding have come from water and that makes it harder to tell it they have any grinding due to years of tumbling down stream.

I do knap but I haven't worked much with creating left or right beveling. Now that its in my head ill have to get going on it though. My tools are all packed up too. All I can do is walk and pick up stuff until I move. Once that happens I have my own converted garage that's my workshop and land, both of which I've never had. Been in this townhouse for 11 years. I am not a townhouse guy.

Well congratulations on the move. Land is a good thing to have. When you get back to knapping think about when you sharpen a point and bevel it how you hold it to sharpen and see if being right or left handed determines the bevel. Good luck on the move. Every man needs a little land to play on

Amen. It's not a lot but its enough to not see another house except the farm across the fields. And lots of trees. I will experiment with beveling and hope it happens soon. I'm itching to get some new rock. I grew up with a major creek in the front and acres of forest behind me.

Any thoughts as to why which side the beveling is on?

I'm not sure why most of the beveling in done on the same side. If you hold a piece with the tip up they are almost always beveled on the left hand side would which lead me to believe most were done to be used by right handed people. Out of all the beveled pieces I have found I only have one that is beveled on the right hand side and that is this Lost Lake pictured below.

If you can.. it might be interesting to look at side scrapers from that site.

I've got tackle boxes full of scrapers and knives. A lot of our scrapers are unifaced. Those that aren't could be beveled or straight but with quartz it's almost like you work with what the rock gives you bits that hard. I did pick up a jasper scraper with a nice twist not too long ago. If its not packed up ill post it when I'm off work. It's crude so it could of just been made that way in a hurry.

My point was to check to see if the side scrapers or any other hand tool... were right or left handed on a site that had right or left hand beveled points/ knives... see if they match..my guess is it's just individual knappers hand preference.

Gotcha. Interesting. Gonna have to open some boxes soon.

Man that is great selling your home and then getting another with some land on it. These times are tough on selling anything rite now. When you unpack maybe we can do a trade sometime? I like scrapers and knifes. I like to get them and study them from different areas to compare to mine. Points are just to nice to trade and most dont really care about scrapers. Congrats

For sure rock. I'm always down to do some trading. Hoping to be in the house by end of feb. it's my grandfathers home and land.

Sounds good, that will give me time to find something you like.
