Nugget in the bedrock tip:

I had a visit with a mining buddy this past weekend, and he told me of an epic battle to get a nugget out of the bedrock, and of what he learned from the experience. I thought some of you might like to learn from his mistake.

While out detecting one day, he came across a large sheet of bare bedrock. The bedrock was exposed because the area had been blasted off with a water cannon (a monitor), by the old-timers! It was not fractured bedrock, in fact it was totally smooth.

He was not optimistic at all of the prospects of a nugget. But, for some reason (we've all been there) he decided to swing his detector over that bedrock. After a long time, just as he was about to give up on his crazy hunch, he got a signal, right out of that smooth bedrock.

There was no crevice, no sign of a crevice, nada! So, he had to go all the way back to camp to get a small sledge and a chisel. The signal in the rock intrigued him, but he still wasn't overly optimistic. For those of you that have chased signals in a similar situation, sometimes there's a patch of hot mineralization in the bedrock that sounds off, but this spot, according to him, was sharp and clear right in the middle of the signal, not just a general increase of the threshold like you get when you pass over a hot spot in the bedrock.

Anyway, he made it back to the spot and started to chisel his way into the bedrock. If any of you have tried this, it's an awful job, and you usually wind up with cut knuckles--at the least! Regardless, he kept fighting his way down, busting out chunks of bedrock. He kept checking the hole, and the signal remained very strong.

This only puzzled him all the more as he could clearly see that it was solid bedrock with no sign of any crevice. He finally quit at the end of the day, at a depth of about a foot, but still, nothing in the hole.

An experienced nugget shooting friend dropped by the next morning to see him, and asked him how the hunt was going. My buddy related his tale of the mysterious hole in the bedrock, and told the friend to go over and check it out, and see if he could solve the riddle.

Later in the day, the other nugget hunter returned. In his hand was a fine, fat, sassy nugget. It weighed in at about an ounce and a quarter! After my friend returned his eyeballs to their sockets and zapped his heart to start it again, he asked where the nugget had come from.

Imagine his surprise when he heard it came from the mystery hole!! He asked how deep the other guy had gone into the bedrock to get it. "Well, no deeper" was his reply.

So, here's the rest of the story as to what happened. When the successful nugget hunter got to the bedrock, he scanned the surface got the same strong signal as my buddy. He widened out the hole and scanned again. Still a solid tone. He widened the hole some more so he could get his coil in, and here's the key and the lesson in this story, he got a strong signal off the side of the hole, about six inches down, but set back another inch into the side of the bedrock!!

My unlucky friend, the true discoverer of the gorgeous nugget's resting place had gone deep past the signal while digging his hole!!

Now, of course, a good pinpointer would easily solve this problem. The problem was, my buddy didn't have one, so why would he widen the hole, right? Well, the other guy was the one with more experience, and that's why he did. It was a lot more work, but what a payoff!

So, my buddy's butt is still black and blue from where he kicked himself for the next week or so for having lost such an incredible prize.

Some nugget hunting lessons are harder than others to learn. . . .

All the best,

Lanny

P.S. When in gold country--check the bedrock, regardless of whether it looks likely or not! Mother Nature likes to play games sometimes.

Hey Lanny.
I did find some color. Actually took mom out to lynx creek instead of hitting abandoned mines. Still on the hunt around payson for that. We arrived at lynx creek around 3 pm, definitely later than I wanted, but I picked a spot and dug down a bit. Then I started to pan the gravel. Found some fly poop on first test. So I just kept going. Got a little bigger. Like fly eyeballs. So kept classifying and then panned it down till black sand showed. Then dumped into a bucket. Stopped at around 6:30 pm. Got about 2-1/2 gallons of cons to finish at moms place.
So next morning I had to get home early so I did a quick clean up. Didn't pay attention to what I had found. I get home and my moms calling me excited to say the least. She couldn't believe the amount of gold we found.
I'll post a pic next week Tuesday of what we got.
Funny thing was I went back through the black sand waiting on mom again so we could go detect some washes. I found a couple nice sized specs that got missed. I thought for sure I got it all, but that's what happens when I rush it. Then again there were only two pieces missed.
On our hunting in the creeks mom found some change and two unfired .45 LC bullets. I found some casings and wire plus a run of copper jackets with some lead. I never had a spot that held so many copper jackets. It was like they washed down this hill and said all copper goes here.
Till Tuesday. Have a good time and find some gold for me.
I'm trying to get permission to hunt a well known historic site. Got a connection for that. Hopefully they say yes and I could donate the finds to their museum. Unless they say I don't have to, but they'd probably want any/all stuff.

Man Lanny. Just saw that candy! My golds no where near that big. Yet. Sure makes my heart stop and I didn't touch it.

No problem whatsoever!

All the best, and thanks Eagle--a little eye-candy for you in my updated post,

Lanny
Oh my!!,........Is there such a thing as "Insulin Shock" for too much 'Eye Candy'. For some reason, the world just disappeared. All
I could see was that pan full of gold for several minutes.

Thanks my Brother!! I always get (almost) as much enjoyment out of seeing, as I do finding.

All the best!

That's a very cool story--so glad there was more than you expected! It sounds like your mom is getting hooked a bit too?

Thanks for the update, and feel free to post away with the pics when you're ready--I'd love to see your gold.

Hunting that historic site sounds like a lot of fun too.

I love your insulin shock metaphor Eagle--I had a good chuckle. I'm glad you enjoyed the gold--it's gorgeous stuff, and it definitely falls in to the category of mighty sassy gold.

You'll notice the iron stain on the gold--it was so fresh, they hadn't had a chance to clean it up whatsoever--fresh out of the ground after a buhzillion years of sleeping under about 30 feet of overburden.

All the best,

Lanny

Yeah. She got but by using the detector first. Finding nothing but casings, bullets and trash as well as coins. Depends where I drag her. Lol. Go out in forest where possible Calvary stuff could be from 1800s. Then we'll do a park trip to see if we could find some change/jewelry.
She knew I got bit but had no idea. Her dad/family were copper miners in the UP, MI. We've got an awesome core specimen he had gotten. I'll post that someday.
So of course I showed her what I've been up to. Her eyes got big with that little amount shown. I think if I showed her your pan. She'd relocate up to your area. Maybe your friends could have need of a mother type at the camp. Lol.
I really appreciate spending these moments with her. Now she understands why I love being outdoors exploring. You just don't know what you'll find.

Yes please--post some pictures one day--I'd love to see them. By the way, I'm glad she loves what she's doing--that makes it tons of fun.

Show her the pictures of the pans sometime, but remind her that they were from a mechanized placer operation, not from panning, and not my pan of gold either.:angel3:

All the best, and keep the passion for the gold alive,

Lanny

Lanny,
As always your pictures are some of the best in the business and I'm talking about the ones without the gold. Then you get to the gold, ohhhh my!
I recall the first time a mine foreman took pity on two Dumb teenagers and showed them Canning Jars filled with Gold Nuggets, whew. Just like your
pictures, it makes a persons heart stop, the jaw drop open and the hands shake a little. I need to get out!!! Happy Hunting Brother!..................63bkpkr

Hey Lanny,
Well finally was able to compile my first bucket (5gal) of cons together. This was from 2-1/2 gallons of dry dirt and another 2-1/2 gallons of damp dirt. My kids had done most of the digging on this trip. I guess this trip goes to their college fund. Lol.

Here's the start of the hole before kids dug

image-2197178142.jpg

Here's first 5 gallons

image-777759259.jpg

Here's after they dug

They had a blast. Plus they both got 10 separate gallons for themselves from other areas. When they got done. They said we need to do this more. Lol. I guess this helps burn that extra energy.

Glad you're dragging the kids with, Garrett. This winter will be my wife, and my daughters virgin trips to the creek. They are both looking forward to it, and so am I.

Oops. My hole pics are backwards. Lol. First one is the after pic.

Drywallman
I wish wife would go. She's got OCD. Lol. It's too dirty for her.

Lol, mine is a total city girl... But she is interested mostly for my sake, I think! My step daughter however is 12 and is starting to think differently than the majority, asking me questions about this Govt shut down, prism, etc., and she is interested to go with me for the history, geology, gold, and the chance to talk about real stuff, I can't miss an opportunity like that.

Oh, Lanny... I finally found bedrock in my little creek... Seems that this little section is not a glory hole, but non the less the gravel above it pays. :-)

Thanks for the pictures! I always get excited when I finally hit bedrock--some of the best bonanzas are found there. I hope you hit some chunky stuff.

All the best,

There's nothing like seeing jars of gold nuggets!! That must have been something else--no wonder you've been chasing the gold--that memory is etched forever in your golden memory bank for sure.

Thanks for your kind words about the pictures. You know, the country is so beautiful, it's easy to take pictures that look good--the subject matter is completely inspirational. Nothing heals me or recharges me like getting into gold country.

I agree with you that the gold is beautiful too--it's one of those rare beauties that Nature is very stingy to show due to how well she's hidden it.

All the best,

Lanny
