It took me a while to ID this item, but it is apparently a sterling silver chatelaine. A woman would attach this piece to her sash, which she would then clip functional or decorative items to, as shown in the picture below. I was originally thinking some sort of money clip or brooch, but the two clips on the back are a giveaway for the chatelaine ID (one held it on the belt or sash, the other held the attachments). Based on the maker's mark, I determined that the Blackinton Company made this one. These were apparently popular in the late Victorian era and into the early 1920s, which fits nicely with the property's age and some other past finds. I dug it at about 6 inches down at a former homesite. It rang up like a half dollar, as it is a good size chunk of silver. Also found an Indian Head penny, and a colorful glass button. Happy hunting, and good luck out there.

But... if you notice... there is an obvious "top and bottom" in the overall designs of the Chatelaine clips... whereas in Lens clip there is not.

I think mine has the top and bottom feature, but maybe I am not understanding correctly. Thanks for your continued thoughts and comments.

Not silver but here is a pic of one and one I found . Plan on having it restored , Some day .

I notice Len only likes my posts that confirm the chatelaine possibility. heh

:P

Um... I would be WAY MORE hopeful it was a money clip... but that is just me... FOR... I would actually use the sucker.

:laughing9: I think I liked all your posts, but I admit I am hoping this is a Chatelaine, even though a money clip is pretty cool too.

Did you see my posts ?

Chatelaine... worth zilch but silver scrap... which i would guess would be somewhere between 4-5 dollars... AT BEST... at current silver rate.

UNLESS someone needs that piece for a repair etc of another chatelaine where the clip is broken off.. then you may get 20.

Clip... worth 40 +.. AND usable.

Maybe I need coffee too. I guess I should be hoping for the money clip designation , as it would be worth more . However, for some reason I find the chatelaine prospect a little more interesting, which is why I do this Hobby. Some might find the money clip more interesting regardless of value, each to his own I guess.

And ya got something to keep that wad of small bills in order.

I am not one to keep anything but 20's or larger in my wallet.

I have used money clips for 30 years to hold my 10's 5's and 1's.

Only way to roll IMO.

Maybe I'll use this as a money clip regardless of what it is. I have four young kids living at home, so I haven't seen a $20 bill in 10 years:laughing7:. By the way, I posted this item on the What is It forum, as suggested. I am curious what people will think. Thanks again for your insights and comments.

I learn something new every time I come here, never heard of a chatelaine. Whatever it is it's gorgeous, what an awesome find!

Thanks, Cheffer. Definitely a Chatelaine, though I will never know exactly what the person held with it. I never heard of such a thing either until I found it and did some research. Finding something a bit unusual and lesser known is one of the many things that makes this hobby so interesting. Thanks again!
