Welcome to Tnet, very cool piece!

Steve

Man is that thing cool. What a find. I wonder how old that is and who made it? Could be a very historic find.

Interesting. What kind of material do you think it is. I notice some very obvious bubble cavities. Is it a fired clay piece? Doesn't look like carved stone.

Need more info. Not so sure about this peice. Something about the backside photo showing movement in the legs. Any informative on make of stone and where found?

Very interesting piece! :occasion14:

I'm not sure on the type of stone but it is heavy. my husband thinks it's a quarts type

I'm not sure on the type of stone but it is heavy. my husband thinks it's a quarts type. found in southern missouri

The material may be soapstone.....that is nice.

Definitely interesting ... never seen a bear effigy as far as Native American artifacts go ... wonder if it’s more modern ... do you also find Indian artifacts in this area ??

believe me it is not fake my friend had a local archeologist look at it only one other one found in this area. don't know how old. but we have found over 190 artifacts in my area southern missouri.

I gotta admit it looks like a bear.

I don't see any peck marks or ground areas though. if this is an Indian artifact, I would expect to see some peck marks and areas of grinding/smoothing. I do see depressions in the stone, and some areas which appear flat but not the type I would expect.

Instead of peck marks it appears to have small holes where material weathered out.

Do you see any marks under magnification in the areas of the arrows?

From the 1st image it appears to be about 4 inches in length, which as effigies go would be pretty good size in my opinion.

has any other relics been found close to the area this was found?

Pretty cool find. Definitely a conversation piece. Unique.

The way that it is stylized is not unlike some Inuit carvings, but that would be a long way to travel.

Really cool relic great piece

Beautiful relic, congratulations to your friend.
