I gave my son-in-law a Bounty Hunter Tracker 4 for Christmas last year. He and my grand-daughters were detecting in the wooded area behind his workshop and found this thing about 6" down. We have surmised that it may be part of a plow or some hardware from something like a single-tree or double-tree.

The area where their house is located was part of an old plantation. An old trading path derived from a Native American path runs through the general area. The piece is approximately 10 inches long and 4 inches wide. It has the words "NORFOLK VA" on it. The two holes are approximately 5/8 - 3/4 inches. It is likely cast iron.

Any ideas?

Maybe try some way to clean it up and the wording or letters above Norfolk Va. might be a serial number and someone can I.D. it.Not sure of good cleaning methods others will probably give good suggestions on that.

I did some more research and discovered the thing is a turning blade from a plow. There were several plow companies in Norfolk, one of which was White's. If you look closely above the NORFOLK VA on the piece, you can make out the letters in the word WHITE. I did a plain language search for "plow in Norfolk Virginia" and got a hit with several patent references. Many of the patents show parts similar to the one my son-in-law found. SOLVED!
