I want to buy an entry level machine in the $150 price range as a wedding present for a woman I work with. She has often expressed interest in treasure hunting, and always seems very interested when I mention my metal detecting hobby.

I thought it would be fun to give her an entry level / begginer machine as a wedding present, so she and her husband can try out the hobby without having to make an investment themselves to see if they like it or not.

Is the Garrett Ace 150 a good machine to go with, or are there other better options. I do want them to have a display screen.

Thanks!

Greetings and welcome,

If you do a search for the Ace 250 here in the forums you will find that with very few exceptions it is a very popular, versitile machine with a low learning curve and lots of features and bang for your buck. The 150 is the "little brother" of the 250, with basically the same performance with a few less features. I've heard very good things from 150 users as well, but in all honesty if you can swing the extra $50 I'd go with the 250. Kellyco has some excellent packages, but if you look on ebay you'll find they sell under the name aardvarkmetaldetectors (that might not be entirely correct, just do a search for the 250 and look at a couple of the $200ish packages and you'll find 'em). They ship same/next day via UPS, sometimes with free shipping, and you get even more stuff than they offer in their normal packages on their retail site. You still get the same warantees, guarantees, and support as if you bought from their retail site.

Either way, you can't go wrong with the Ace 150 or 250, an excellent choice for a beginner or an experienced detectorist. Of course, her new husband will never see her again once she picks it up.... they may notlike you very much after this gift!
