I have run the Bounty Hunter QuickSilver for the past 6 or 7 years. I mostly hunt local parks, schools and curb strips. Our ground is hard packed and very rocky, but not very mineralized. I find it hard to dig with my hand digger more than 4-6 inches in most cases. I don’t want to carry a long handled digger in parks and schools.

I find coins and silver jewelry with the BH. I have tested gold rings and the machine hits. I dig most signals above iron. Would there be any real benefit to a newer machine?

If your happy with what your getting then I would say not..
All Machines detect all metals, the only difference is how they VIEW those metals in the ground, 95% of basic coins will be detected with ANY metal detector, the main difference being how a machine see's a coin target at depth... If your not interested in going deeper than 4-6 inches, then there is no reason to look for a new machine, a piece of advice..... Don't listen to all the HYPE, Manufacturers come out with new "Latest Model Technology" every few years and tout it as "The New GoTo Machine" for all your treasure hunting needs... Don't listen to the Hype, your machine will probably get 95% of the same targets that the new machines will get...
The only real time an upgrade is needed is if you change your hunting patterns to include something that your current machine has issues with...
Like if your machine can't handle salt water, and your moving to a salt water beach...
Hope this helps....

When I started using my latest detector on spots that I had hit hundreds of times with ones I owned in the past I couldn't believe how much I found. Most of these were in areas of high iron trash and the newer machine just did a better job of picking good items out from the trash. So I'd say you would almost certainly find more if you upgraded, but if that's worth it would be totally up to you.

Blewfur one quick question. How deep does your machine find coins ?

I agree. A modern high end machine with it's faster processor can make old sites perk up again. They can pick out targets that were masked before using a slower machine. With more adjustability, they can usually go deeper and handle harsher ground conditions too, if that is a problem in your area. Another area to consider is weight and ergonomics when comparing detectors, especially when we get older and still wish to detect the same number of hours.

Roughly six inches, but the soil is compacted and rocky, so with a hand digger, that’s about as deep as I can dig . I may end up getting a long handled digger for curb strips. I don’t want to draw extra attention in schools and parks.

If you are happy with it performance, no need to upgrade. I started with a basic machine, after hunting for a few months and studying up on the subject and what options were available at the time, I knew I wanted to see target ID numbers (0-99) I wanted the option to ground balance, a notch function, and the new machine needed to have a DD coil with multiple coil size options. I then upgraded to a mid level machine that gave me all those items. It kept me content for 6 months, but I still wanted a better faster machine with more functions. I ran into a fellow detectorist leaving the hobby for health reasons and I bought his top end machine at a great price. (I still swing it today).
