Any New York leads?

I have tons of research in NY and have also overlayed about 40 county maps from 1800s onto google earth to show structures and feature the are or are no longer there

as for French and Indian war the french and indians started burning and pillaging forts starting with Oswego and working east 5 of the 6 forts near Rome no longer exist but are still there if you know where to look
Stanwix is known but there is also Bull,Wood Creek Newport Craven and Williams

anyone got any stories/ legends of western new york west of the gennesee river??

I went to the state library and did a lot of research on the Tea Island treasure and uncovered that a large hole was found dug.... Looks like someone was searching for the treasure if not already found it.

I can tell you that my reading of the Terry book for my county is mostly a bunch of bunk. I bought the book when it was first printed. Most of the "ghost towns" listed never existed. I was born and have lived most of my life in the county. He looked at a map and called all kinds of things as ghost towns that are not and never were towns. In rural areas a lot of crossroads were named. They were just crossroads. Some of these are listed as towns. After seeing what was listed in my county I lost all interest in reading any further as I do not trust the info.

Just my 2 cents.

New York treasures waiting to be found
At the old Jeffery Amherst Fort site at Crown Point, Essex County, treasure may have been buried.
In the Montezuma Swamp near Seneca Falls the Loomis gang is said to have buried much loot.
At Grand Island in Lake Erie, not far from Niagara Falls, a fortune is said to have been hidden by an early resident.
Near Hell's Gate in the East River a ship carrying a vast fortune was lost many years ago, and although the area is not large, the hulk of the ship in question has never been found.
The west shore of Lake Champlain is said to offer possibilities for electronic metal detector use, and quite a few old coppers have turned up.
The notorious Captain Kidd is said to have buried much treasure in coastal areas, especially at Gardiners Island. Most probably, if such still exists it includes few American coins. There are numerous accounts of lost chests, sunken ships, etc., near Manhattan in the East River, Hudson River, and New York harbor areas. Long Island, with its extensive sandy beaches, is said to offer many possibilities.

Some War of 1812 trivia for upstate NY. I used to live in Madison Barracks, small military post just outside Sackets Harbor. There were two major battles there that kept the British from controlling Lake Ontario. One in 1812 and another in 1813. Known as Fort Pike back then and Fort Volunteer, they hastily guarded the east side of Black River Bay. There were also numerous fortifications, Forts Kentucky, Virginia, Chauncey, Stark and Tompkins which protected Sackets Harbor from land attack. Then there was Navy Point which was at the north end of the town which obviously was a Naval station. In 1815 Forts Volunteer and Pike merged into Madion Barracks. Opposite side of Black River Bay was mostly Indian Territory in the area now known as Pilliar Point. Still are Indian Burial Grounds and remains of them being there. I visit Pilliar Point every summer. Even though Sackets Harbor is a Historical Area and you can't hunt, there are just acres of open fields that are accessable all over the area.
During the civil war, Madison Barracks was a training facility for the army. War wan't fought that far north.
As far as Fort Drum (about 30 miles or so from Sackets Harbor), it didn't come into being until 1907 and was known as Camp Hughes, then Pine Camp just before WWII (lived there a short time too). became Camp Drum after the war and then Fort Drum in 1951.

Another interesting story is in the area around Carthage, NY but then thats an older story for another time. (lived there too)

ANYTHING IN THE BRONX AND OR YONKERS WESTCHESTER OR THE 5 BOROUGHS???

If ye buys me a rum I'll tells ye the story of ol' Bill Johnson on the St. Lawrence.

Seems 'ol Bill had a penchant to extends the War a bit, so much so we's not quite sure which one, and took it upon himself to board the British Steamer Sir Robert Peal (in 1838, kind o' a late hit) and made off with the military payroll of 20,000 pounds sterling bound for Kingston and fired the ship on the American side near Alexandria Bay, NY. Now most of the men involved were captured within days, but the money was never recovered. Somewhere within two days walk of Alexandria Bay the payroll still lies hid . . . perhaps. Egg Island is suspected as a stash point, and seven caves are known, but none contained the silver.

That be the tale as told at Alexandria Bay

Now here's one that don't mention much o' a militia or military payroll at all, and the Rock Island Lighthouse still sits at the mouth of the St. Lawrence in Jefferson County. Now mightn't a man who even allegedly had 20,000 Lbs in sliver a dropped one or two ounces on his daily rounds?
