Yes that's what I'm thinking only British... Is tiny type the proper name ? Is there a name for these?
 

Well I do know one thing..... It's damn old... ;)
 

could be tintype or ambrotype,dont think its dagureotype,so that dates it no earlier than 1860- or so
 

I'm still unsure on it being for a pic.... 2 holes in centre and a little part missing from the back... Or was this how they mounted the pics ?

I agree,but am not familiar enough with all frame varieties to say for sure?
