SO WE WENT BACK TO OUR SPOT THAT HAS PRODUCED INJUNS, HALF DIMES AND LARGE CENTS ALONG WITH A 3 CENT PIECE TODAY. BOY WAS IT A GOOD HUNT. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A 1777 SPANISH REALE BUT IM NOT SURE YET. IT WAS ABOUT 9 INCHES DOWN AND GAVE A VERY IFFY SIGNAL. AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS A CANADIAN SILVER. I ALSO GOT AN 1845 LGC. HOLY COW I CANT BELIEVE IT. I THOUGHT THE DAY WAS GOING GREAT WHEN MY PARTNER FOUND AN INDIAN HEAD PENNY. THIS IS MY 3RD LARGE CENT IN A WEEK. HOW CAN I CLEAN THIS COIN WITHOUT HURTING IT. I WANT TO GET THE DATE OFF OF IT. ANY INFO ON THE SILVER COIN WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.HH

Very nice!!! Proceed with caution if ya clean it up! Post pics if you do though.

The LC needs NOTHING done to it!

Congrats! Great hunt!

Awesome finds!!! I would buy a sonic cleaner, eBay has them for like $30. That would clean it up with out rubbing, without chemicals & no electrolysis.

Great finds for sure  I'd use olive oil on that large cent, it looks to be in very good shape. I'd let it soak for several hours in the olive oil then scrub it with a soapy toothbrush myself.

Don't do as advised above!!!!! You will want too soak in distill water then if you have to clean the copper cent more ,put in bath of hot peroxcide after your done bathing the copper cent put it back in a distill water bath...

this method is not advised on any silver !!!!!!!!!!

I put all of my copper and brass coins that I find in lemon juice. For a coin of any value, only put one coin in one jar/dish of lemon juice.
For sure, never never put an aluminum coin in the same lemon juice that you have any other coins in.....you will get an imprint of the alum. coin on any other coin it touches.
Lemon juice, then rinse, again fresh lemon juice, then rinse, again and again until it is what you want it to be......And I have found that the
cleaning process works better if you agitate the lemon juice.....every five minutes or so, gently swish the lemon juice around in the jar that you are cleaning the coin in.
This will take ALL OF THE CRUD off the coin, to include down into any pitting that the crud has made. There have been coins that I had wished I hadn't cleaned.....they looked better dirty then they did cleaned, due to the pitting that couldn't be seen beforehand. But, you never know until you try.

THANKS FOR ALL THE INFO AND TIPS. I AM NOT GOING TO CLEAN THE LGC. IT IS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE. I DONT PLAN ON SELLING MY COINS ANYHOW. THE REALE HAS HAD A QUICK SHOCK THERAPY. IT IS A 1777 WITHOUT A DOUBT AND IS A 1/2 REALE. THANKS AGAIN AND HH.

The Big Copper is a stand out but the 1777 Reale    is OUTSTANDIG!!!

That is a good feeling to unearth something that great congats.

Nice hunt. That is one nice spot. The Reale may be counterfit. It looks plated to me.

I've had peroxide destroy a coin before. I was refering to the copper not silver.

here's one (copper) that I cleaned last year with olive oil only

I totally agree with the olive oil treatment. It is a very slow working process though. I let green copper coins soak in it for 2 to 3 MONTHS. They come out nice and brown!

Wrap the half reale in tinfoil and submerge it in a plastic container of salty water. Leave for 30 minutes and remove. This is a mild electrolysis and will get the black crust off the coin. When you remove the reale just give it a wipe with a damp cloth. If the black remains put it back in the water...in the foil.
