Well, I found my first cut silver, and it sure is a nice one! I'm fairly certain it is a Pine Tree Shilling, which would make it my oldest coin so far. I've neglected to post my best finds so far this year, but I have to say, these fields are producing quite nicely. I will do a catch up post tomorrow with the highlights from my hunts at this site so far. I felt this find deserved its own post. I found this about 4 inches down with my new 11"x13" coil for the Deus. If anyone can help me identify the variety of the coin I would appreciate it. Are cut coins like this worth grading?

It's probably way too good a find to play the imagine if game, but with such sharp detail it sure would have been a great to find whole. The graders no doubt would have labeled it with environmental damage, but I bet the details would have been up there.

Before it's all said and done you'll find a complete one.

I hope so! I never had my hopes up about finding a Massachusetts Silver before, but now I'll be hoping to find one in every hole.

Fantastic Find. Remember that Mass Silver, starting with the New England type shilling, six-pence, and three-pence, were the first coins minted in North America. You found real history. Congrats! Now enough with the accolades - got get some more Mass Silver!!!

Silver Tree Chaser, (awesome name, by the way) Did you find the one on your avatar?

I considered selling the piece when I first found it. After a day of consideration, I won't sell. Something like this is so rare that I could spend a lifetime looking for another and never find one. The way I see it, maybe it will be like having a girlfriend, when you have one, other's always come knocking, but when you're single, they go running.

p.s. to answer your question: yes, I do have Mass Silver!

Very rare, noteworthy find......congrats

Oxbowbarefoot-

Yes, my avatar comes from an Oak Tree Shilling, a Noe-14, that I found back in 2006. Here's both sides -

I believe that you'll have no regrets for holding on to such a rare find. You can always opt to sell it at a later time. For now, I would enjoy the pride of ownership that comes with a piece of Mass Silver. Congrats & Good Luck.

P.S. - I'll have an interesting post as well - stay tuned for details.

Wow, that Oak Tree is in fantastic condition. Are you from Mass? If so, which area?

Thank you. I'm jealous of your area. You can't walk along a lake shore without tripping over beautiful quartz arrowheads. My dad lives down in Six Mile, SC. I've driven through Charlotte a few times on my way to visit. Beautiful city.

Haha...went to my high school prom at Daniel with a girl from Six Mile! I now live a few miles down the road in Anderson...btw, VERY nice find...was with my good friend Bill Ladd when he dug his cut tree coin.

That's funny, what are the odds? Have you had much luck detecting in that area of the state?

Reading my old thread and stumbled across your eerily accurate prophecy. IP the soothsayer!
