Well, I found my first cut silver, and it sure is a nice one! I'm fairly certain it is a Pine Tree Shilling, which would make it my oldest coin so far. I've neglected to post my best finds so far this year, but I have to say, these fields are producing quite nicely. I will do a catch up post tomorrow with the highlights from my hunts at this site so far. I felt this find deserved its own post. I found this about 4 inches down with my new 11"x13" coil for the Deus. If anyone can help me identify the variety of the coin I would appreciate it. Are cut coins like this worth grading?

BK I will stop today!!

That's an outstanding find that you rarely see. Almost all of the Mass. silver coins I've seen posted are whole coins, and this is the only other cut piece I've seen other than the one I dug 4 years ago. And yours is in much nicer condition. I think mine was I'd as from a NOE-11 per Don in SJ. Hope you can get lucky enough to swing your coil over another hunk of that historic silver. Again, great find!!

Congrats on a rare one. Aside from Bill D and Billb Ladd you are the only person I have heard of finding a cut tree coin. Awesome find!

Hi! Sorry it's taken me a while to respond on this one. Gorgeous piece of cut silver and a real show piece for sure. I would put it in a nice slab container and pad it out with white cardboard and then go ahead and search for the remainder. Since it was used as currency the other "bits" may be quite disparate (due to them being in circulation). I found a cut large cent last year and I doubt the other half is in the same field, but I do hope you find more. You have pulled some amazing finds from that field! Congrats!

It's probably way too good a find to play the imagine if game, but with such sharp detail it sure would have been a great to find whole. The graders no doubt would have labeled it with environmental damage, but I bet the details would have been up there.

Before it's all said and done you'll find a complete one.
