This kind of a cool story that gets you thinking about some alternative places to detect. Last summer I packed the girlfriend, the dog and the detectors into the truck and headed up to California Gold County, We did a lot of camping, exploring and detecting in some awesome locations and even came up with a few good finds. On the way back home we traveled over a very steep cold snowy mountain pass that was used by the 49ers to reach the gold fields from the east. As we drove over the pass to the east and down the other side I began to reason that any 49ers or settlers that would have tried to make it over the pass might have had to lighten there wagons by dumping, burying or stashing there belongings or would have had to rest up before making it over the pass. I further reasoned that they would have stashed there stuff under prominent landmarks like big trees or rocks. A little farther down the pass I noticed a group of older tress that just had a conspicuous look about them. So we hopped out of the truck to let the dog make some yellow snow and much to my girlfriend?s dismay, (she was already late for her hair appointment) I found my self hiking with my detector to work those trees, at first nothing much was happening then suddenly a few nice signal right under a big tree. A few clads later and i got another good signal but much stronger, A little digging in the cold frozen ground and I unearthed an old porcelain pot that had obviously been buried by someone a long time ago, I knew I was on to something but before I could dig any deeper I was interrupted by a very unhappy and cold girlfriend that had enough of the lovely 40 degree weather and I knew I had pushed my luck hard enough for the day. So I hiked back to the truck and we headed for home. On the way home I was already planning my return trip (without the girlfriend) to see what else might be buried under those trees. And if my hunch is right it might just be a find of a life time.
