We went out Ghost Towning here today in Iowa and FOUND a great Ghost/Semi-Ghost. Only about 30 residents if that left in this town. There are more abandoned buildings than there are occupied ones. It was great. I even got to metal detect for about 15 minutes but my son had to pea and we left. I will be back!

The town even had a great little old park behind the still working post office. Great old ball field and a SCHOOL that is still standing but so CLOSED!!

I am so excited because this is the best ghost I have ever run across in Central Iowa!!!

OH.... I almost got hit by a train.....

Enjoy the pics.

wow cool stuff! Its too bad those houses are falling apart. Looks like a lot of history there... wish they could be saved. I hope you find some good stuff there!

That school house looks like a place that would be nice to clean up and live in.

I thought that too. If I had the money I would buy up a ton of old properties and restore them...and of course MD them.

IH,

thanks for the photos. Very good looking
site. How far from your location; will you be
able to visit it often?

Best of luck; but I don't think you will
need it at that site.

have a good un.............

Sherm, it is quite a haul from my place...bout an hour so I will not be visiting it that often, plus I have all kinds of sites lined up now that I got that stones to ask permision to hunt on private residences. I will probably get up there soon for a whole weekend with a buddy. And... I always need luck. Thanks!

Looks like a find, alright. Keep us updated, post pics of your finds. Two words of advice (which I doubt you need.) 1 -- Be careful. Some of those buildings look ready to fall on YOU when you are in them. 2 -- Don't just get permission, get it in writing. A clear contract stating what your share of the find will be can protect you should any locals get "litigation fever."

HH!

Thanks for the advise. I will NOT be going in buildings. I have an EXTREME fear of them falling in on me. I do have a contract that I have people sign. It gives me rights to all items that I find IN the ground except for any items that they list ahead of time that they or somebody else has lost or hidden(they must be specific, not "I lost $50 in change over the years", but my grandpa hid a cache of silver coins will be specific enough). In addition to an EXTREME fear of buildings falling in on me...I also have an EXTREME fear of litigation too!

Congratulations and good luck! I've lived in Iowa all my life and didn't know there were any real ghost towns. :)

There are actually thousands. I seem to spend more time finding ghost towns than metal detecting. I think I have been to 100 or so ghost towns or at least sites of (corn field now) within 60 miles of Des Moines.

The parks are pretty much picked over as it sounds like you"ve found out. I don't do much park hunting. My favorites are house yards. They keep me pretty busy. I did stop at Smith lake up your way early this spring. Pulled out some change and a religous medal hunting the beach and playground.

you must have got there before me i went in spring and didn't find anything but about 10 pop tabs. that was also before i learned how to use my dfx

did you go on the grass or did you stay on the beach. also did you encounter any dnr people when you where there. when i was younger i was camping and a guy with a medal detector came by and pulled out a SIX INCH knife plade out of the volley ball court. i tend to be shy still so i don't like going places where their are allot of people around. so i mainly hit houses and praries. praries are my favorite now. i pulled out like 1.50 -2.00 in an hour. that was all pretty random stuff. lol
