What a day! I woke up very early and headed out. Had to stop for a 9 volt at a local store. There was a cop car sitting there with the number 8 on the side. I am extremely superstitious and 8 is my lucky number. In fact, I'm so superstitious that if I set an alarm or the microwave it has to end in 8. And when I go detecting I won't get out of my truck until the time ends in 8. Ok now that you all know how psychotic I am I can get to the finds. I got into the woods and instantly got lost. Lost for about 2 hours and my phone had no reception so I couldn't use google earth. I finally got myself oriented and got into the area I wanted to be in. The finds came slow but there was no modern trash so that was nice. I got a couple of deep round balls the found nothing about an hour. I decided I was going to just get down by the water and walk the edge. I've had some luck doing this in the past. Barely any signals at all. At one point the edge of the bank gave way and down I went. Got myself back up the hill and realized my setting had gotten screwed up. So I got my machine set up again and a couple minutes later I got a deep signal. Not a very good signal. But I dug a couple inches off the top and scanned it again. It sounded much better after that. I dug a nice big plug and it was still down below. Finally I got ahold of the object and pulled it out. I don't want to sound over dramatic here but some dirt fell off the coin and I could clearly see the branches of the tree. I swear I couldn't breath for a few seconds. I knew I had just dug Lifetime #1. On my wish list. It's a feeling that I can't put into words and for anybody who's felt it....well it's just incredible. Put that baby in my keeper case and finally regained my composure. I took a few steps and got another deep signal. Once I fought through the roots for about 20 minutes I got my fingers on a very thin disc. I pulled it out and had no idea what it was. I thought I could see a design but just packed it into another keeper case and carried on. A few minuts later I found a copper coin and a very old button.
I know how stupid this is going to sound but I'm gonna tell you guys anyway. After about 20 minutes I honestly had to look in my case because I just could not believe what I had just found. After I got home I emailed IP for some advice. He graciously helped me with some advice and a bit later and put both of the coins in lemon juice. I could not believe that the other mystery disc was a 1664 cob, another lifetime wish list find. And I am so damn happy to have a hammered coin in my collection.
Today was an absolute dream come true and the pay off for tons of research and lots of hours hiking through the woods digging holes. I'm glad I was able to share this day with my Tnet friends. You've all been very supportive.

HUGE CONGRATZ TO YOU! Bet you had a hard time sleeping that night. I remember when I found my 1663 1 Reale Cob, like it was yesterday. I was so stunned that I found one out in the woods at a cellar hole. The rest of the hunt was a blur. WTG Buddy!

Ok almost 7000 views? This is getting ridiculous already, big freakin deal this dude found a couple of mid 1600s coins, not that rare, WHO CARES!............

lmao, jk pal, I'm just very jealous and still can't believe how sweet those bad boys actually are!

I know I'll be glad when he gets back to normal... 2 designed buttons and a broken buckle. :laughing7:

Thanks Reb! Yes you just never know when and where. If you do the research and continuously put yourself on great sites eventually you'll hit a great one....or two in the bottom of one of those holes. 1663 cob is an incredible find. Do you have pics of it. I'd love to see that baby

Seriously, though, what's he going to be like after this? I can see it now: "Hey buds, just got back from a long hunt. Nothing much to show for my hike through tick-infested swamps. Just an MS-65 Large Stars 1807 Capped Bust half, which was inside a change purse engraved with the name "Napolean Bonaparte". Weird name, but to each his own, I guess. And ah... oh yeah, and a large cent counterstamped by George Washington. That's it. Oh wait, I found a whole roll of 1916-D mercs. Oh well, can't win 'em all. Better luck next time. See ya, guys. Good luck and HH. Abe."

All kidding aside, once you hit the top , the holy grail of finds, where do u go from there?, lol even 1700s coins and relics won't be as good

I'd say that's a good predicament to be in!!

The beauty of this hobby is that there's so many incredible finds to make. Esp for a northeast hunter. There's GW, rev war, patriot and loyalist buttons. And after this find it kinda makes you believe that anything is possible. Why not a NE Shilling or a disme or half disme? Why not a very early American silver from the 1700s. Why not a super rare key date? As long as we all continue the process of research, hunt, recover anything is possible. And you're right I've had much worse problems lol

Stop being so greedy...lol

Well I know one part of Pennsylvania that's getting pretty cleaned out:thumbsup: lol

Had to go back and read your post again Abe to get myself re-energized. And I never get tired of looking at your awesome coin. Its design with that magnificent tree encircled with the state name has gotta be the coolest looking of any US coin. And the reverse is just as appealing with the huge date and denomination. Hope I can be fortunate enough to walk over a whole one at some point, but the odds are decidedly lower down here. Maybe you'll eventually end up with a whole pile of them like New Englander Hank Phillips. Do you know him?

I do not but it sounds like I should. Love to hear his story Bill. I too think it's one of the most beautifully designed coins. That big fat 1652 is gorgeous in my opinion and the spelling of Massachusettes represents such an exciting and tumultuous time in this strange land. I truly hope you find one some day Bill but in the meantime that Lord Baltimore will have to get you through........poor guy lol. All the best my friend

Stranger things happen and the question of why would that be here, that being said Bill I'm only half the distance from Abe than you are, but the chances me of finding an awesome coin like this is really nil for me. Heck even a Cob would be stretching the limits of reality for finds.

Abe your one of those fellows that seem to have a knack of coming across some pretty awesome finds, and that shows your efforts and research is paying off and that my hat goes off to you.

I'm sure everyone knows I was busting Abe's chops with my post at 2:30 AM. The scary thing is, he's only just started so I'm positive there's lot of cool stuff coming his way. The great thing is that we have this forum so the rest of us get to go along for the ride. I really do hope he gets an NE shilling some day. Can someone share some info on the Phillips guy who found all the shillings? That piqued my curiosity.

Ha I loved your post and it gave me quite a laugh. It's very difficult to continuously out yourself in areas that can produce those very early finds but that's been my goal since day 1. It sure what I would do if I found a NE Shilling. Heart attack maybe lol. Like I said there are just so many amazing items in the ground waiting for us. I was just looking at the 1792 half disme found. Now that is a crazy recovery. I hope everybody on here gets to feel that excitement t some day. With a little luck and some good research maybe is will get to feel it again some day. All the best guys, Abe

Here's a pic of some of Hank's coins that I found on his FB page. I think he's found 7 tree coins in all if I remember correctly. That's the most I've ever heard of someone digging.
