I dug this buckle while metal detecting next to the stone chimney of a 1840s cabin and the stone chimney has steps

Sure it is. Back in the day when we didn't have a Tnet to come ask on, we did our own research to learn about what we'd found. Doing the homework is how the folks here gained the knowledge they have.

Its a typical horse harness buckle. Brass with iron pin. Tough to date, they span late 19th C to about mid 20th C.
