I got frustrated waiting for the snow and ice to leave which seems to never come this year so I went yesterday image.jpgto a close spot that I knew looked real good because of of an old stone wall which runs through the woods to the ocean. I hit the spots in the past and never had much luck besides a few 1940's penny's but it always called me back to it. I only had an hour to hunt before dark and at the last minute I got a nice high signal in the woods about 5"-6" down. I knew I had a silver coin so I carefully got through the frozen lair of ground (2") with my hatchet and then dug out the soft soil with my tool enough to get my pin pointer out. When I found the coin I was happy how good of shape it was in and the spotted the date. It was a key date 1887 Canadian quarter. Only 100 000 mintage and very rare above fine condition. It was probably my best find ever and wasn't the first frozen winter find I had. Some of my best finds were going detecting
"out of season"! (:

That 1887 quarter in VF20 is worth around $900, and that value doubles at EF40!! You sure have an excellent find there, congrats!

1 casper2.jpg love that old canadian coinage

VN... and it is worth a good $ also....

I prefer winter hunting over mid summer when it is very hot and flies drive ya crazy...but hatchet and 2 inches frozen..lol ---wow...you earned your silver !!!!!

Fantastic find hope there are a few more in that frozen ground for ya. WTG

Some frozen ground I wouldn't even think of trying to get through. But the woods usually stay somewhat soft year round. (: My favorite time of year for metal detecting is the early to late spring when there is no bugs, it's not to hot, and most importantly the grass/vegetation didn't grow back yet. There is spots that I can hunt 100% of in spring that in mid summer I may only get to do 25% because it's all grown back in thick.

Very sweet find, nicely posted with good pix and good story. Thanks for sharing that save with us. Congrats!

Here's a few better pictures of the 1887 quarter. Hard to get good photos with my phone.

That coin is really in amazing condition. On mine you can barely see the date. It's very worn. Always a bummer to find a fairly rare coin that's beat. You've gotta be psyched pulling one out with such great detail

Excellent recovery! Beautiful coin!

Excellent winter find. I would need a front end loader and a jack hammer to dig any thing I detected.

Tough to dig a better looking Victoria quarter than that, heck it's tough for me to just dig one as I've only found a couple in about 13 years.... and the condition is a far cry from that.
