A Thought And Challenge

About that 50 year old quandry.

If someone buried a cache less than 50 years ago, but it contained coins over 50 years old...

Coins over 50 years old and cache less than 50 years old.
That's easy, don't tell anyone!

Make sense to me. Happy New Year.

Let's say someone squeals on you when you find a cache that was buried less than 50 years ago but contained coins more than 50 years old. What do you suppose the authorities would do?

Hi Joe,
I think the first issue would be the landowner wanting their share. If the
landowner was the government I think (my opinion only) they would seize
it and make you go to court to ask for it back. In the meantime it would
sit in a property room and you have to worry about it not walking away.
I would sure want a receipt of exactly what is there when it was seized.
You should document it on film, possibly with witnesses before it is seized.
If someone squeals on you then it is: he said/he said and it would be up
to the squealer or possibly a court search of your premises to find out the
truth. Where did this squealer come from with this knowledge? Unfortunately
there are too many greedy people around that don't want anyone else
to do well. Keep it to yourself.

Some times, it does not make sense to get the owner permission. It took me ten years to get the ower permission. It was not worth it.

Bragging about cache finds can get you poor real quick. First are a whole bunch of people who
step forward and claim their share; they either told you about it, they knew about it first, on their
land, they had a claim on it, it belonged to their ancestor, etc. Then if it is over 50 years old
(1959 or earlier) then there are multiple government agencies, historical agencies etc. that
want to take your antiquities away from you and even fine you for digging them up and lastly
the IRS will want their share even if you lose it in court.
Whatever you are left with is fair game for all your poor relatives and friends. You will get
multiple requests to lend or give a few dollars to all of them and the ex-wives who will take
you to court for more alimony. Just look at Lotto winners who are broke in no time at all.
There is an old Italian saying, "MONEY IS ROUND AND IT ROLLS AWAY"!
So, don't expect any large caches to be pictured here. Small ones maybe and they are just
as hard to find as the larger ones.
Have fun,
Rich

i agree with you 100%. ron

Well Boys, what do you think? Should I oblige Minton or not?

Of course not. Why is he so interested in others finds? Perhaps he is just someone who likes to antagonize people. Can't carry on a decent conversation with others - always has to be aggresive (challenging?) towards others. Or maybe he IS IRS or some other government stooge. Who knows without proof? Ignore him and carry on.
1. We all (well most) know TNet is monitored by the Archies for sure & other agencies.
2. Most of us are old enough and been around long enough to have witnessed or heard of people being burglarized for their finds.
3. A wise old THer told me something I keep in the back of my head all the time. "Notoriety sucks"
4. Brag about a large find & you'll be looking over your shoulder pretty much forever.

If someone is here looking for help or guidance why demand proof? I'm sure most people are old enough and smart enough to accept the help and guidance and chuck the rest. Sit back read & learn! There's more experience and knowledge here than you'll ever be able to sop up. And best of it all, it's offered free of charge!

I personaly know 2 men who have found two seperate caches.
The first by a man who was in his teens and got in trouble for being in an abandoned house with his friends. There were a couple hundred silver dollars in a wall underneath a non-functional heat vent. Happened in the mid seventies Is now one of my best friends and is as honest as the day is long.

The second is a man who has a business and was hired to find a stash. Relitives of the man who burried them. He was hired based on a percentage. Did not get it in writing and got screwed, not a penny. 2) 1.5 gallon buckets of silver coin. 1) small bucket of gold coins. plus two segrems 7 bags of coins he wasn't allowed to see.

There is a post over on the findmall xterra forum about 6 months ago who found a cache and had the mod post for him. Another one who got zip out of the deal, but he was ok with it. I'll see if I can find the link.

I myself had left a cache of 3 sm. coffee cans when I was in the 6th grade. Been dieing to go talk to folks who own the house now. All clad I think.
