But it's not a coin.

Out today with a newbie, on some fields he got permission for but I figured they were hunted, and that was confirmed when we talked to the farmers. About 2 hours in with 3 down and two left to check, and down to 4 hours hunt time left I was sort of kicking myself for staying in an area I knew was hunted... but regardless I was going to check those last two fields. I eventually located a patch of iron and we began digging misc. brass and copper, nothing too old, maybe mid. 1800s. All I wanted was a simple sign it could have been a house site, at least to have some hope there was something to find... and then this thing popped out! Really couldn't believe what I was seeing, and then had to explain to my friend that I had just turned the day around in a big way.

Rev War period 24th Regiment of foot officer button.

More odds and ends that turned up. A few 1800s coppers, bayonet frog clip, Canada Militia button, watch winder, a few flat buttons and a bird band.

Now that's a great button, you sure turned the hunt around...just imagine if the newbie found the button...that's how I felt when hunthicks found that french 1/2 ECU :BangHead:.... especially after his last years success.... I think I got a military from the last hunt but so toasty, i may never know...

After I explained what it was, I told him it would have killed me to see him come over and ask what it was, had he found it. He is about as new as it gets.... every old find is a first. Unfortunately the only ones he knocked off yesterday was silver quarter (1953) and a nice tombac crotal bell. He did dig quite a bit, just was not lucky in what he found.

There was one funny moment. He started doing the old coin celebration and I just got there in time for him to realize it was a false alarm. It did look like a copper, but had a small piece sticking out, and was a part of something, so just junk. As I start swinging again I make a joke that he didn't even get to finish his touch down dance, and seconds later, me also waiting for my first copper I get a great signal, dig it up, and think yep got one.... and then realize I got the same damn part! Probably the other side to what he had just dug.

Unfortunately, if you read through the thread there was really nothing around the button that was as old, so not really a site to pound hard to try and find another. If there's another keeper to be had it will just be another random find.

Is that your first 24 Regiment button you've ever found?

Not so much a bit** slap...more of a love tap lol. That button is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As far as Rev buttons are concerned you might as well post a pic of me with running legs ! With no resident military presence during the time period . Most of our fighters in the REV. had to walk by foot to the fighting . I need a survivor that lost his buttons after he came back from the war ! Not quite as many as you might think! MR By the way a jealousy great find ! MaineRelic

We got lucky in that sense, because most of the Loyalists and some British came this way. When I started detecting I never imagined finds like this were possible, and then when I dug one, which happened very soon after I started, I thought it was one in a million. But as I started to better understand the history, Rev War finds started to make more sense. It also makes sense it would be harder for you because you'd only have a small amount of soldiers heading home, and maybe a new settler here and there, where as we had a massive influx of soldiers landing from about 1784-1786.

Very good, must be the year!

Must be all those detecting reality shows making us better. ;)

Yeah, I thought timeteam were bad at IDs & theories of land use, until I saw some of those US shows.

wOW---i MISSED THIS POST !!!

CONGRATS ..on the officers button..guess you haven,t cleaned out PEI yet !!!!

Can,t wait to find my 1st silver button !!

Looks like a great hunt you had.

Basically all of the Loyalists from Maine ended up in your neck of the woods. I'm sure this is true of other places as well. I just read a little bit from a Rev War soldiers journal that discussed doing some scouting in my area. It was fascinating and I could not believe the miles they put on in a day. We've got it soooooooo easy :-)

Funny this hasn't made banner, considering the rarity...seen other rev war buttons make with that weren't an officer's button...not to take away from their significance....guess to each his own...

Patriot you're absolutely right. I'm pretty new at this but I'm pretty sure this is a hell of a lot rarer and more significant that a LOT of items on the Banner. I'm gonna vote and try to get this ball rolling....not that I really think IP cares either way but it deserves to be there

You're right IP doesn't care either way...I guess even in this hobby variations of hunter... we have clad, relic, jewelry and coin hunters....we all have different ideas or lack of knowledge of what should be on banner.
