Re: A Large Cent and a coin I can't identify

upon further investigation it is a 1749.

Re: A Large Cent and a coin I can't identify

No offense, just curious. How can you tell it is a 1749? A photo of the date side is not posted. The older head version was made from 1740 to 1754. The central device would have been made using a master hub with the lettering hand punched into each die individually. With dies wearing out and being replaced, hundreds if not thousands of individual dies would have been used in those 15 years. With that many dies and the coin in that condition it would be difficult to attribute it to a particular die used in one year. While colonial coins are my area of interest, I don't have extensive knowledge of British coins, are there identifying factors to attribute it to 1749? I need to brush up on British coins, thanks.

Cutler:

I should have been more specific If you look closely at the 1753, the image and lettering is not raised like the coin found so that eliminates the later date. George produced halfpence during 1729-1740 and 1742-1754. Keep in mind that the coins needed to be imported into the colonies. Although they may have been produced from 1740-1754, I am not sure that all of these dates these made it to the colonies. I DO KNOW that 800,000 halfpennies dated 1749 were shipped to Massachusetts as partial payment to the colonists for their assistance in the Lewisburg expedition.

I should have said the SERIES of 1749, although I am not sure if any other dates made it to the colonies in large numbers. My bad!

Gotcha, thanks Neil, the 1749 Halfpence and Farthings , I think shipped in on the Mermaid if I remember right, were prevalent in the colonies. I have seen George II coppers of almost every year found metal detecting, though every one I found was almost obliterated. I had to buy a 1749 to represent one shipped on the Mermaid. It would be great to find a 1749 that still had the date, there would be a good chance it came in the shipment.
