I went to a place I call zip city. It's a modern park, never expect too much and usually that's
what I get. It's a place where one can expect clad and maybe hope for a bit of bling. The hits are just regular
enough to be able to stay interested but there's not much trash. So, it's usually a nice peaceful walk.

As you can see from the bulk of the finds:

( a "no value" token)

This is why I call the place "zip city" :) .

You KNOW what my title line might have been if this had
been the best find today. ;) LOL

BUT.....

The star of the day AND of my lifetime of hunting!

I'm walking along and I get one of "THOSE" hits. You know.
89-91 in ALL directions? Plain as day? Only a couple inches down?

Some do a victory dance when they happen upon a lifetime find but I tell
you I don't do that sort of stuff. BUT....in this case....I did do my personal
version of a victory dance. Me and my ATP go into this waltz like dance! I
spin it around the hole and just listen to that sweeeeet 89-91,over and over and over! LOL

Finally I get down to business and I gave the ATP a "dip" to beat all "dips" and then dug.

Here's what I saw:

I've always worked with a theory.
That every place was something else before it became what it is today.
This just continues to prove my theory.

My oldest silver ever!

Before anyone attempts to rain on my parade, I did some preliminary checking. The weight and size are correct. ;)
But, even if this would prove to be something other than I think it is, it still counts. After all it is my "book" after all. LOL

Thanks for taking the time to share in my happiness!

My banner vote is in. We need to see that coin at the top. Again, congratulations.

Knowing how you feel about the " banner " and the attention seekers, I have to admit I have been chuckling all morning at this little quirk the MD gods have thrown your way. If anyone in the world deserves to find this coin, it is you. You have certainly put your time in the field, and are the first to share what you have learned. The banner is supposed to represent the good part of our hobby ~ the FINDS and not the people finding them. For this reason alone, I have to cast a banner vote for the coin.

Bingo!
Congratulations sir. Could not happen to a nicer guy. Be interested in your muratic acid microwaveble electrolysis machine :hello:
It looks all the other members liked your find as well.

Thank you for all the kind words. But, if you knew me like Jeff does, it does sort of put me in a contradiction of terms. LOL :)

Congratulations on making banner gary, couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy!

Congrats on a fantastic find and for a well deserved Banner! I could be wrong but I think your' Capped Bust Half Dollar may just be an 1812/1 "Large 8" Variety. I can't be sure of the diagnostic of the "1" with the current pics. You would likely be better in seeing if the evidence of the "1" is there, so please check out the diagnostic via (**) PCGS Coinfacts (I tried posting the link but it gives a redirect to the PCGS Coinfacts sign in/sign up page). However, if you can post a closeup of the Date and especially the "2" in the Date, maybe we can also tell. If it is in fact this Variety, even with the damage and cleaning, it will likely fetch a fairly significant price.

The link below is helpful but doe not point to the diagnostic which has the appearance of a small Die Crack below the bottom of the curl of the "2" to the angled bar.

Thanks for the helpful information Frank. I have seen both the test and the pages and between my friend and I we've determined it to not be the mint error. No matter how much we wanted it to be. ;)

Besides, you have to understand me. This coin was worked hard for, nearly 40 years. It will not be for sale. If I'm wrong and it's worth a "mint", the one I pass it on to can play with that idea and more power to them.

For now, it's safely tucked away in a bank vault. :)

Thanks again!

Thank goodness it's there. What's next on the bucket list? Since you like to " experiment ", how about you conduct one and share your findings with the rest of us? I think it would be interesting to know how this affects your hunting now. Do you get impatient while hunting after this because you now know your areas can provide finds like this, or do you now slow down even more and search more thoroughly because you want to duplicate the find with another wanted find? Now that I have planted this in your mind, I believe you will wonder yourself.
Remind me to get your autograph the next time we hunt together.:laughing7:

Congrats on getting up on the banner W and a well deserved first one!! :occasion14:

I think you can just flash a picture of it and gain entry, you're good for a long time!

Congratulations on getting something you have wanted for a long time, and with such detail!
That was one heck of a walk!
I'm guessing your walks will be more relaxing with anticipation and a smile for the next item on your list.

I hope the Banner doesn't chafe too much, well deserved, CONGRATS!!!

I was a bit afraid that after finding such a wonderful coin that everything else might begin to pale in comparison. But, if you look at some of my best finds in the best find area. You'll see I've been very well led in my searches for a very long time. I've had many, many highs! Yet, I'm still out there, hunting, and loving every minute.

About the only thing I did was to check the area with a very tight grid. To see if just maybe, it was more than a fluke earth movement that brought this to where I found it. It did give me a very neat, very old cow tag. :) But, no, I won't change much. What I do seems to work often enough. As far as slowing down? Why? This was as plain a 90 vdi at about 4 inches as one could ever want to hear! I think I could've been running across the field in a thunderstorm and still would have had to stop and investigate. :)

I hope he isn't so upset with us for putting him up there that he stops talking to us now MBB:laughing7:. Let me be the first and say " Sorry Gary for putting you in the loathed limelight ".

Congratulations Whadi on the banner find! It inspires us all to understand that the dirt is old, and people have been dropping things in it for centuries, and artifacts and relics are found in modern spaces! Sub 8-)

Congrats Gary on the killer find!
What do you call the park now? :)

Congratz!!
On finding such a Beautiful Old Coin. & The Banner..
Davers

Congratulations on your nice 1812 Bust Half Dollar.
You'll probably be going back to the same hole and rechecking it every now and then just to make sure you didn't miss anything.
I've been back to the gold coin site maybe 15 times now.:laughing7: and even dug deeper than eight inches just to make sure I hadn't missed anything.

I'm waiting for the big head destiny speech. Where you were born to dig great things and you expect these every time out. In all seriousness everyone must have liked it because they voted and you did not campaign with an entourage either. The find stand on its own. Ok back to real work!
