out with hogge yesterday went to a spot we thought had a hole to dig but what looked like a hole in the winter well it wasnt all that walking for nothing.so we took a ride up the mountain to much snow still,so hogge asked if i wanted to go to the button field,a place we have hit a number of times, i said sure but i only have a couple hours and i got to go.well its a good thing we went there, after twenty mins,i got a one way hit,so i started digging after digging a one foot deep hole and two feet wide,i still had nothing, but it was beeping,i was loosing hope and started detecting in a different area of the field.almost gave up,after 10 mines i found myself over the grater i had dug ,as i stared into the hole i thought theres something in there, and with one more shovel full it was on the surface i didnt even know what i had ,but it said 1818 was heavy and was silver,so i called hogge over and he said it was an 8 reale, spanish silver.first coin of the year, you gotta luv that

Glad to hear you're keeping it. It would be a great find even if it were real (not reale!). The fact it's a fake and desireable makes it that much more of a keeper. the history of why it was faked, who minted it and how it got to the place your shovel was would be some interesting research.

With all that said, now get back out there and get a legitimate find! :laughing7:

Good call. It's a perfect example of a great coin that's not worth enough to sell. I certainly wouldn't even offered way more than you were offered.

The last year the mexico city mint made coins with a portrait of carlos the fourth was 1808.The strike does'nt look right either,I would definatly say it's a counterfeit...Kane 23

It's no longer a question. Already ID'ed as 100% counterfeit.

I've examined this closely in the metal, and have to say that it's the best made contemporary counterfeit I've seen. Besides the date, and low grade silver, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. EXTREMELY well made. When I first saw the date I had my doubts.(At first I thought it was a date error of "1" over "0") Then when he told me it rang on, penny or copper, I threw it on the ground and went over it myself. Sure enough. Under magnification, some of the small scratches are actually red, or copper colored. From what I gather from the guys on the C-4 site, these well made, contemporary counterfeits, were circulated in the colonies, but were few and far between in this quality. An awesome find, and glad I was there to witness it! Hogge
