Have been told depth is determined by width.. so with that in mind.. soil conditions not considered about an inch..
DD will be better in mineralized soil.
I get good id and tone on a dime with the 4x6 down to about 4" on the coinmaster GT (prizim shooter 4x6) Quarter about an inch or more deeper. Deeper than that tone gets broken up and vid jumps around.

if you want a 5.3 shoot me a p.m.

Depthwise the 5.3 is deeper than the 4x6, concentric coils by nature do better with discrimination of iron (bottlecaps) , as for separation the 4x6 does better. They are both good coils, super trashy areas the 4x6 for sure, believe you are about right on the depth Doug, prob 1-2" more depth from the 5.3, but depth wont help much in real trash spots, just my 2 lincolns, jhar

I have used the 4X6 on my XLT and now use one with my VX3. It is awesome in trashy areas. It amazes me how good of separation of the good stuff from the trash. I have several coils for my VX3 and my #2 coil is the 4X6. The 4X6 will allow you to get into tighter places than the 5.3, but you won't go wrong with either coil. You will love the smaller coil no matter which one you choose.

I have one for my V3i. Unless you have a specific need for one and will use it often enough I would pass on it. They are so small they take forever to cover any ground and they have limited depth. In a tot lot near the metal poles they work well. I have had much better luck on the smaller SEF coil. So much in fact I rarely ever used the DD and it's very light too with great depth.

Thanks for all of the info. With trash being my biggest obstacle I am going to get the 4x6 coil. Thanks again

Hello Seabees,

I use the 4 x 6 coil in really trashy places no sane person would hunt, with very good results. I agree with “RobRieman” the coil is very small and it will take you some time to cover an area, but since no one else wants to hunt these places; time is on my side!

I have the standard 9.5 and the 6x10. The 9.5 is my main go to coil, however I hunt a lot of trashy parks, side walk strips and lakes that are covered with lead and pop tops. What size do you recommend with the SEF coil for both good separation and depth

6x8 SEF. I never take it off. Great balance and depth, much lighter and great separation in trash.

Hey Rob, this is the one. Detech 8x6" SEF Butterfly Search Coil (White's) and from the reviews it sounds like it will give me the best of both worlds (4x6,5.3) the depth and separation.

I'm a bit late jumping into this thread, but I have and use both the 4X6 and the 5.3 on the original MXT. If really heavy trash is the issue, I much prefer the 4X6 as it is near surgical in its separation. You do have to slow down and hunt smaller areas well, before moving on. That said, the 5.3 is good in more moderate trash and has enough depth and coverage to serve as a general use coil much of the time. Ultimately, for me however, I find I end up using the 6X10 DD most of the time as it has good coverage and separates quite well for its size. My two bits.

Hello Seabees,

On my DFX the 6" x 10" coil replaced my stock 950 coil. I like DD coils and with them have never used the pin point function on the detector (or any detector I own). For the V3i, I use the stock DD coil unless in a trashy area, where I use the 4" x 6" or the 5.3" coil. My "go to" coil in some of the places I hunt is the 4"x6" (need to go slow and listen). Each of the coils serve a specific need and location dictates the one used.

Regards,

I've been running the 6x8 SEF for a few days now and it has been delivering. I've hit some parks, an old housing track, and today I'm heading to the beach. So far, I'm really impressed. Initially the coil has exceeded my expectations. The use of this coil on a V3i is pretty awesome.
