Today I tried to reach a homestead from another way in and to make a long story short, a 20 foot wide stream changed my plans! ::)

So, I decided to follow the banks of the stream, which of course were solid with green briar bushes, and head back slowly to my truck and go somewhere else.

As I neared my truck, I saw a tiny deeply cut narrow stream ahead and started to detect as I headed towards the bank of the stream. As soon as I got to the bank, I got a coin signal, but the depth indicated less than 4 inches. So I was sure it was going to be modern trash.

Wrong, just under the humus layer, about 2 inches total in the ground was this large cent! My 99th one!!!
I took some photos of the dig, and then grid hunted the small opening where brush was not too thick and got nothing else.

Seems like January was the month of one Large Cent coin per hunt only allowed. :)

It cleaned up fairly well, the soil in this area is usually not kind at all to coppers so I did not expect it to be even as good as it was. So, it is an 1827, at least all four Large Cents this month have been different years. 1802,1822,1827 and 1829.......

PS- your 99th one?

OK, it's official. I hate you now. ;D

(I think I've found 50+ each of silver Rosie and Merc dimes in all my years of hunting, but ninety-nine large cents is something I can't even wrap my mind around.)
Ninety-nine large cents.

As far as accomplishing finding 99 Large Cents, yes that is an accomplishment for where I live, considering we never had a big population in our area and over 90% of them have been found at long forgotten in the woods homesteads. Also, all of them found one at a time, no two in the hole finds.

With that said, not far away from me in the corridor from Philadelphia to NYC, there was a big early population base and I know of a few who have 3-400 Large Cents and over a 1000 Colonial era coins. One difference for them, most were found in fields and the fertilizer was not kind to the copper. There are times when quality over quantity is nicer. :)

My son and I share our sites, I have more than him for various reasons, I did well the four years he was away at college and also I have been retired for several years and kind of have more time to detect if I so choose. :)

Oh, my son has 53 Large Cents, so since we hunt the same sites, it can be said our sites have produced 152 largies.

So far this year he has zero Large Cents but last evening on the way home from work he found in a quick 45 minute hunt before dusk set in a 1695-1701 William III copper. Nice way to start off 2007 for him. :)

From the land of the Bluenose.....that sure is a nice one and I see that the soil was kind to it and left it in good shape. Looks like a nice peaceful and quiet place to go a digging. Thanks for sharing!

J.D. in Missoura told me that Bob in N.H. found 50 Colonial coppers in two days! They are out there! HH!

I asked NH Bob to join Treasurenet this week and he did! So now that he is a member, hopefully in the Best Finds section he could post his story of his "Field of Dreams" finds...
