Today I tried to reach a homestead from another way in and to make a long story short, a 20 foot wide stream changed my plans! ::)

So, I decided to follow the banks of the stream, which of course were solid with green briar bushes, and head back slowly to my truck and go somewhere else.

As I neared my truck, I saw a tiny deeply cut narrow stream ahead and started to detect as I headed towards the bank of the stream. As soon as I got to the bank, I got a coin signal, but the depth indicated less than 4 inches. So I was sure it was going to be modern trash.

Wrong, just under the humus layer, about 2 inches total in the ground was this large cent! My 99th one!!!
I took some photos of the dig, and then grid hunted the small opening where brush was not too thick and got nothing else.

Seems like January was the month of one Large Cent coin per hunt only allowed. :)

It cleaned up fairly well, the soil in this area is usually not kind at all to coppers so I did not expect it to be even as good as it was. So, it is an 1827, at least all four Large Cents this month have been different years. 1802,1822,1827 and 1829.......

I remember when I got my 99th 1700 era coin, I stayed stuck for quite a few hunts before I easily past that mark. I did a physical recount last night, just to make sure my Excel S/S was correct on the numbers and they were.

Now of course, the weather will be part of the challenge, but luckily other than a dusting of snow outside, it will just be braving the temperatures this week in the quest for #100. :)

It is fun to have goals that are achievable, I remember when the Large Cent goal was ONE, then TWENTY, then FIFTY, so, small steps at a time and disappointment does not come. But where is my Chain Cent? ::)

The attached photo is one of my favorites, it was my 77th one. :)

Nice one Don, sounds like you're having a good winter hunting season
keep it up,

I do not mark my sites with GPS, I do my best on an Excel Spreadsheet to assign a number to a site, and then a brief description of what it is and where it is.
Example:

Site Location:
177 Wm Moore Homestead Old Baker Rd

Since I have been doing this long before GPS was available I just stayed with this system, I could back track and mark them but I am up to over 215 sites, but I would venture a guess that 80% are no longer available or worth going back to.

I do believe marking location with GPS is an excellent way of recording the locations.

I am a firm believer in Excel Spreadsheets, for recording the silver and old copper coins. Then you can sort many different ways, use color coding, like I do for ease of seeing the different century coins, RED =pre 1800's; GREEN = 1800's, BLACK = 1900's.

I can sort my finds by Location, Type of Coin, Dates of Coins, or Date Found which is how the standard sort is.

I keep the Location number key list on a separate sheet of the Excel Workbook.

Nice find, Don. You get the Jersey Devil award again. But watch out. He's gonna be after you for digging up all his coppers. LOL

man thats awsome. it looks like you have some good areas to hunt. all thats here in southern illinois is clad grrr. lol i really like the pic of your favorite one that one is really nice

Sweet find Don. Large coppers are great in any condition. Your's is pretty nice considering the age and all. Funny how you got that one lonely drop in that area. Gotta love it.

Nice job. I like the before and after pics. THat one seemed like it cleaned up good. :)

215 sites - wow. That probably does not include sites that you did not find any large coppers. True? That is a lot of hunting! I'll have to count my sites for the last 2-3 years. Thanks for posting this kind of information. Puts things in perspective.

Nice find/s~

Fourth for this three week period?

Geez, man... I've found three large cents... EVER!

Aaargh, y'make me sick! ;)

Seriously, tho'- thanks for the "action shots". Seein the sites and spots where people find stuff adds another dimension to reading about a find.

PS- your 99th one?

OK, it's official. I hate you now. ;D

(I think I've found 50+ each of silver Roosie and Merc dimes in all my years of hunting, but ninety-nine large cents is something I can't even wrap my mind around.)

Ninety-nine large cents.

Hm. Why do I suddenly have a German song about red balloons goin' through my head? Ach. Never mind.

Hey, you'd better have a party (and do a giveaway, maybe of a nondug large cent) when you find #100!
