Decided to do a night hunt last night at the new site. Was swinging for a little while and had dug a few holes. Got some trash and a 1941 wheat. I was working on a nice dime tone, digging the hole when the excitement really started. Now this place I am hunting has no outside light. The nearest light is probably a street light 2 tenths of a mile away. There are three buildings on the property all side by side. There is woods in the back of the buildings. Out front is US 17. I also have a headlamp that I am using only when I make a recovery. I hear some dogs in the distance barking. Didn't think anything of it. A couple of minutes later thought I heard something behind the buildings fall over or something. I kept digging because I didn't hear anything else. After another minute or two I hear a loud slam and squealing tires and I look up and hope this Tahoe coming down the Highway stays in control and doesn't end up in the yard where I am.(only 10 yards off the Highway). They stop and back up and I am wondering what they just hit. Along comes a toyota camry, sees this Tahoe backing up and goes into the other lane. Next thing I see there, it looks like this Camry goes airborne and slams back to the highway. I then realized what had happened. The Tahoe had just hit and killed a black bear and the Camry ran straight over top of him. He wasn't a large one, only 150-175 pounds. The scary thing is the gentleman in the Tahoe told me the bear came from the other side of the house I was hunting and right into the road. I never knew he was there but knew then why the dogs had been barking and what I had heard. When out night hunting be careful. I was wearing a sidearm but things can happen. Ya'll be careful out there.

Chief, that is incredible. We don't have bears here but that has to be pretty scary especially at night! Too bad for the bear.

Keep safe...

Great story. So, what did they do with the dead bear? Fresh road kill like that is immediately skinned out by the animal control folks and the meat is taken to the local boy's home or the Salvation Army......, that is deer I'm talking about. No road kill 'possums or other vermin :D! Road kill deer that have been on the road for a while but not spoiled yet is taken to the zoo and fed to the lions. They think they have died and gone to heaven. Monty

Monty,

Around here the wildlife officers are notified and they usually dispose of the bears. It would be nice if you could get fresh killed big game for people who need it but nobody around here is allowed to accept it. Not the homeless shelters or soup kitchens or anything. If you or I clean it then it hasn't been properly handled up to FDA standards so they aren't allowed to accept it. It is a shame with all the people that could be fed off a good size deer.
