Spent my lunch break out in the farm woods again today. This was my 2nd hunt.
No ticks or snakes yet, but I ran into so many spider webs, I came out looking like a ball of cotton candy! :o
Yesterday I scored two old buttons, and today a few more cool finds. Pictured are part of the stream and some of the woods I am working through. There is no way to grid something this large, and with so many obstacles. I try to be thorough, but a lot of the targets are just plain luck!
My finds today were:
*A large decorative piece with an Eagle at the top. I'm assuming this is from an old wood stove?

* A squished 3-ringer bullet under a large root. (I'm glad I didn't give up)

*A small oval pin with three initials in the center. Looks like "HBC" to me. ***UPDATE- It is "WBC" not "HBC" like I first thought. Not that it matters. ;D
What do you think? Any idea how old this may be?

*A neat "Apple Pie Ridge - Pure Apple Cider Vinegar" bottle.

*Old Pepsi bottle. (1960's?)

*Asst'd unknown relics.

Have a great weekend Folks.

Very cool digs! Hope you can find some info on the items.

Re: 2nd day in woods brings LARGE Eagle!

Cool finds. What a huge relic that eagle is. :)
I found one of those whats its by the pepsi bottle last year and I think Gypsy ID'd it as a plow implement of some type. Congrats!

Thanks BDoo.
Yeah, that eagle was a real treat to haul through the woods with me. :'(
At least I could have used it to throw at any snakes if needed. ;D
I'm thinking about mounting it on the hood of my truck. What do you think? ??? :o

Re: 2nd day in woods brings LARGE Eagle!

Cool finds! I think that unknown is part of a plow or other farm equiptment. I have found many of those in the past. Way to go on some great finds!

Re: 2nd day in woods brings LARGE Eagle!

Neat finds MM...that farm thing looks like part of a sickle(?) bar...the eagle looks like a stove pipe flange?...nice stuff..

Re: 2nd day in woods brings LARGE Eagle!

I guess that there aren't many people that grew up on a farm on this forum. The metal farm implement part is a sickle bar hay mower "tooth" or guard. These were bolted onto the mower bar to protect the individual triangular blades from rocks, ect.... Also acted as a guide for the blade.

Too many hours putting up hay in my youth.

Great finds and keep up the good work!

Very nice pics of the place you hunted. Beautiful place that sorta reminds me of some of the places I have hiked here in the Appalacian Mtns. Great relics on your digs as well.

Congrats,

Rev

Thanks Jeff.
I wasn't raised on a farm, but my Mom has asked me numerous times if "I was born in a barn". ;D

Hey MM
Nice civil digs there, I like the belt keeper, I would bet that a buckle would be near by.

Re: 2nd day in woods brings LARGE Eagle!

Nice finds MM! Just a guess, but that eagle looks like it could have held a clock? I've never seen a cast iron one though.

Re: 2nd day in woods brings LARGE Eagle!

Steve you have beaten me to it.... I also think it held a clock. If you look at the base, it looks like it was meant as a stand. I think it will look nice when cleaned up.

God bless
Peter

Doug,

You sure find a lot of interesting relics in those spooky looking woods. Great pics....

What do you do with all of you relics? Do you keep them in boxes in the garage? I barely have enough room for my coins; I don't have a place to keep relics like yours.

Dan,
On the small stuff (buttons, pins, tokens, etc.) once I get it ID'd, I put it in a small (2" x 2") zip baggie with a small card showing the info. Description, circa, date found, where found, etc.
Some of the mid sized relics, I've been collecting and plan on putting them into shadow boxes, and hanging them on the wall for interesting displays. Ridley made me two nice wooden shadow boxes to get me started. As far as this Eagle piece, I will clean it up, paint it, and put a clock in it.
I wonder if my wife would want it for a Christmas gift? Hmmmmmmmm. ;D
I love finding the old relics as much as finding coins.
Have a great w/end.

Re: 2nd day in woods brings LARGE Eagle!

I believe it to be a mantle clock, my grandmother had one almost identicle to it, but it was smaller. there was a time during the mid to late 1800's when they really got cast iron down to a fine art. and you could get almost anything made out of it. GREAT FINDS!! ;)
