Today turned out to be absolutely amazing. Some friends and I returned to the rev war camp we found last year and began hunting. We started off slow and didn't really manage anything except some old square nails. I headed back towards the hot spot area from last year where I got a sword pommel and where we dug many buttons and I got a signal that sounded a little better than a shotgun shell (which we had dug dozens of). I was thinking maybe it was another button, but then I saw the numbers 21. I stood up and said "oh my god" about 15 times. I ran over to my friends and showed them. This is absolutely one of my best finds ever. After that I didn't get anything else except another dropped musket ball and and some sort of brass loop, probably camp related. I am still in a bit of shock. Finding something like this was a bucket list item for me. 21st badge.jpg

Great Find! The 21st fought at Saratoga. I see you are from Ma........I'm in Pittsfield. Found several Rev War relics in the surrounding towns. Interesting........

I actually found this one in the Champlain valley. Haven’t found any rev war stuff out in far western mass. A friend of mine did score a royal provincial button there though...

Hey I was thinking this because I'm reading a book about King Philip's war: Have you ever detected any sites associated with that series of conflicts? If so any good finds? Thanks.

I have searched a field near one massacre site of 60-70 colonists. I only found a musketball which could have been from it or many years later. A lot of those sites are built on or searched. Also I wouldn’t expect them to produce any extraordinary finds other than musket balls, civilian buttons and maybe a kettle point.

DoubleH, Congrat 's to you on an Over the Top find of Saved History. From the Rev War too. This would truly be a once in a lifetime find. It will look great and deserves a place of honor in your display.....If it hasn't found itself there already. Happy for you man, & Continued Success to you in this area and elsewhere.

My friends thought I had a gold coin when they saw me flipping out actually... hahaha. I am actually more pleased with this than a gold!
Gold is in the eyes of the beholder, and in the eyes of a Relic Hunter, that piece of History is Pure Gold!

Thank you! This is probably one of my favorite finds yet. Have always wanted to find something like this. I find it even more exciting that it is a first known item also! Also gives me hope about how much great stuff is still out there!

Yeah I gather that a huge part of it is that the areas have changed so much over time... even the markers have their own history! I think I was reading about that one yesterday! Such a fascinating part of our history. I would be over the moon to find a kettle point! Thanks for the response! I look forward to your future finds!

and thinking about it... though a kettle point would indicate that time period from what I've read even the Native Americans where mostly using muskets to fight the English. Still I'd like to find one!

A kettle point is one thing I have not found... yet... hahaha. A friend of mine has found two and another friend found one and also a rolled point. Would be neat just to find one. Really need to be in an old and historically significant area to get one.

Amazing find. Rare, and in nice condition to boot. Finding previously unknown Rev War stuff can be frustrating. There are only a small handful of big time collectors out there. If a few examples of an item exist the value drops significantly. If you find the only known example of an item and it can be directly associated with the revolutionary war through documents, references, or period paintings you'll get top dollar for it. However if you find the only known example of something and there are no period paintings or references that exist to verify your relic, it won't command the value it should. You're almost better hanging onto something like that with the hopes some historical reference does turn up, although that likely won't happen at this stage if it hasn't turned up already. Then of course you run the risk that others may be discovered and sold ahead of your item...thus decreasing it's value. None of this matters of course if you don't intend to sell your item...but the reality is, someone will someday. Anyhow, great find and thanks for sharing!

I will be keeping it for some time. I have already allowed it to be reproduced for reenactors though, so at least it is being raised from the dead. haha
