Today turned out to be absolutely amazing. Some friends and I returned to the rev war camp we found last year and began hunting. We started off slow and didn't really manage anything except some old square nails. I headed back towards the hot spot area from last year where I got a sword pommel and where we dug many buttons and I got a signal that sounded a little better than a shotgun shell (which we had dug dozens of). I was thinking maybe it was another button, but then I saw the numbers 21. I stood up and said "oh my god" about 15 times. I ran over to my friends and showed them. This is absolutely one of my best finds ever. After that I didn't get anything else except another dropped musket ball and and some sort of brass loop, probably camp related. I am still in a bit of shock. Finding something like this was a bucket list item for me. 21st badge.jpg

Killer find!!! How about a cleaned pic & a pic of the back? I can't imagine this not making "Banner"!

I have a picture of the back but it’s not great. I took it in the car shortly after finding it. I am not going to clean it, just got all the dirt off of it. No water or anything. 317A01C1-B586-4990-8A7A-603DB3FB14F3.jpeg

The style of the 2 looks period, I'll say you have a WINNER there. Even without looking on the net I suspect it will be hard to find a matching example. However, is it present in any Rev War books?

What is really interesting is that it is not! It appears to be the first one of these known!

Once in a lifetime find! An easy BANNER in my books. Huge Congratulations! :occasion14:

I'm sure the moment the experts agree on the period it will find itself in the banners section. But ,in my view, due to its style and being found in US it most certainly is Rev War.

Honestly, not that surprised at all. Most badges from this period are extremely rare.
What interested me about the reverse fixing holes is that it had a double pin arrangement, odd for such a small badge & not present in the 19th C versions (as far as I'm aware of) All good news - CONGRATS again.

Don Troiani took a look at it and said it was most likely for a light infantry belly box.

Great Find! The 21st fought at Saratoga. I see you are from Ma........I'm in Pittsfield. Found several Rev War relics in the surrounding towns. Interesting........

In other words......It would be a considered a "Cartridge Box Plate". Just curious.......Any offers yet?

Nice, nice item. Don't worry about the "experts". The 21st was here during the Revolution and the construction is correct and that's about all it can be! That's enough for me.

I found it in the camp we had discovered last year. Not far from it we found a 21st regimental button back in September.

Haha, excellent find and something that could slip by unrecognized. Banner all the way on that sweeeeeet, unbroken, rare, and exquisite example. I don’t remember ever seeing one in any books. My vote is going in man. Keep on it in Mass bro!!

Thanks man! It is probably my proudest find ever! Apparently it will be added to Troiani's newest relic book.

OK thats a good guess, as the fixings look extra secure/strong, which I thought odd for a hat/shoulder/lapel devise.

I'll give a banner vote as this sounds like it's even more rare than a gold coin and backed with some great history!

My friends thought I had a gold coin when they saw me flipping out actually... hahaha. I am actually more pleased with this than a gold!

Come on guys! Get this on top where it belongs!!!!!!!
