1970's Novelty Lamp?

Hi, well I think that this is some kind art deco or novelty lamp. I'm 41yrs old and Mom had this in the house since I was a little kid.

It's really neat, when you turn it on the buld warms up and it generates heat, from the heat it begins to rotate the interior cylinder that sits upon a pointed stem.

The outside is like a lamp shade but sits and covers the entire buld and stem and becomes the lamp. This one that I have pictures 5 cowboys next to a fire and a waterfall scene. When the bulb is on and the interior cylinder rotates around it gives the effect of the fire burning and the water moving.

The ficture that holds the buld reads LEVITON on it. That's all I have to go by.

Just wondering if someone knows of these and some kind of value it may have.

Thanks!

I remember those from the 60's and early 70's. I think you smoke pot and stare at the colors. :D

LEVITON is the manufacturer of the lamp socket.

They were around in the early 50's.

My GRANDmother had one. They have been around for longer than even the 50's. My grandmother's had already been around for awhile.

They are so cool. They had many different scenes. My grandmother's was a forest fire. The moving air from the heat of the lightbulb is what makes it turn, and they were very popular.

Looks like a TV lamp. Folks thought it would relieve eye strain from staring at the tube for long periods of time. From the 50's

I beg to differ. While very popular in the 50's, the first motion lamps were in 1931.

The forest fire lamp I was talking about was 1931 - they copyrighted the scene in the 50's.

Thank Edison.

Flames (1930s) (Samuelian Book Pg. 19)
This rare Scene in Action motion lamp is a wonderful addition to any collection. The frame is copper and there are three picture areas to view each with a different fire theme. The images are on very fine paper and have a tendency to wrinkle as you can see in my photo..

Re: 1970's Novelty Lamp?

Actually, Scene-in-Action Corporation was one of the earliest producers of Motion lamps. They started in 1925 and were in operation until 1936.

L.A. Goodman made it's lamps out of Los Angeles California.. These lamps are often the largest.. 11" x 6" and are also very popular on Ebay. The Cowboy Camp Fire Lamp features a group of cowboys around a campfire drinking coffee, and a very mysterious waterfall on the other side that almost looks volcanic as it flows. any of these in fine condition can cost you anywhere from $80-$300+ depending on your luck and timing. In fair condition, perhaps some mild warping, or scratching, you may get one under $80, but these are even climbing in value pretty quickly.

Cool!

I knew they were older than the 50's - I'm not surprised that they are older - Edison worked on one when he was working on the "moving pictures".

In good shape, and especially for certain scenes, they can be worth a little bit of change.

I remember those. We had one in the 1950's. I think it was called "The Fountain of Youth'. There was a little boy peeing in a stream!

Re: 1970's Novelty Lamp?

Thanks everyone! You all are too funny! I see now where the lamp shade reads 1953 on the vary bottom of it. Unfortunately it's not in perfect shape but it still is good and works.

Wow the replacement parts are expensive! ::)

Cool Stuff! Thanks!
