1965 Silver?? Quarter

I have been metal detecting and collecting coins for years and came across a strange coin. It is a 1965 U.S. Quarter that looks and feels silver. It is in rough shape and is very tarnished. Looks and sounds just like every other silver quarter I have found yet I thought they stopped making them in 1964. The edge is one color (silver) and the coins has that distinctive silver sound to it. Coin weighs 6.19 grams. Any one ever hear of one of these and if so is it valuable??

I've seen lots of coins with the reeding worn off. It can come from repeated use in a slot machine, sliding down the coin slot wears the reeding off. It would be called a casino coin.

Not a bad idea, but it will cost $40 minimum to grade it. He's going to feel pretty silly if he spends $40 to grade a clad 1965 quarter in rough condition!

That's why I recommended that he do an acid test. You don't put the acid on the coin. You rub the edge of the coin on a touch stone and test the sample on the stone.

Not at all...Everything about this shows its a worn Clad quarter

No, they didn't start doing that until much later. I think it was in the 1990's.

Dug coins naturally sound different than rolled coins
