Here's a coin to make your heart jump out of your chest. Found this one at a local school, about 4" deep. The scan doesn't do it justice - it would be VF+ coin without the corrosion. Oddly, and I know this is hard to believe, but this is the second one I've found. Got one in PA when i was a teenager and immediately sold it to buy a new detector. Life is weird sometimes.

Up for sale on Ebay Sunday 27th at 2pm pst.

Re: 1909 s vdb

Victor David Brenner...the guy who designed the Lincoln bust for the new "small cent" as it was referred to when in the design phase. The earliest versions of the Lincoln Cent featured Brenner's initials (V.D.B.) near the bottom of the back of the coin. Apparently, this type of display of a person's initials was considered offensive, and the initials were removed later in 1909.
BTW Chuck, great find

"Nicely done! I've never liked Wheaties, but boy would I like to dig an '09S VDB or a 22 plain! Looks like you've been at this (detecting) a while. I've only been detecting a few years, but I've only found a handful of Wheaties, and yet 2 LC's! One of them was pretty much just a copper disc, with only the faintest wreath visible on the reverse. The other, an 1830 with EF details. Anyway, that's interesting that you've found two of these rare coins already. Best of luck! "

I like wheat pennies because if you find a few, that means there is probably silver around too! Yeah, I started detecting when I was 12 years old, so I've been at it a while. i have all my wheat pennies in a big jug - they weigh about 25 pounds! This summer I cracked the 15,000 coin mark, kind of an historic thing for me.

A very rare find indeed! Good job!

well you got $100 bid already!

When I started detecting back in 1960, I sorted all my wheats by decade before I rolled them up, I have to get them down and look, because I believe I have half or better than a roll of 1912-S's. And man have they appreciated since then, I also have a bunch of 1912-D's. I currently have about 196 rolls of wheats, all dug.

Yeah, I just picked up the 2009 edition of the Red Book, because a lot of my coins have gone up too. Those early wheat cents have really taken off! What surprised me was the 1924-D that's worth $10 in G-4 condition - I've dug a couple dozen of those here in Missoula, where the Denver mint mark is very common. Still can't get that 1916-D Mercury, though!

Final sale price on Ebay - $510.00! Not too shabby!

Awesome find!

now thats the way to do it, great find.

I too, have dug two, but both are in way crappier shape then the one you posted. We need to start a "I too, have dug two"...Club! Of course, to fill the Whitman folder, I need something like a 1937-D, something that had 500 million minted. Gotta love this hobby!
