I recently obtained permission to hunt a church yard built in 1890 so I went and did an hour long scout on the half acre lot. I hit penny after penny with many being 66 and newer. 2 wheats in the 50's and canadian pennies from the 40's.......what makes me scratch my head is they were all 6" deep....2 70's quarters and 3 66 and newer dimes were also at this depth.......I was told the lawn was never redone that the owner could recall. I don't want to tear this place up but I feel I may need to in order to get closer to turn if the century. Btw.....I passed by 20 penny hits in ten feet because they were 6" and I got tired of digging them.

them hits on pennies can change into silver once ya dig some

Yeh specially relying on an at pro to correctly id something at 6 inches....lol

Just seems like an aweful lot of late 60s early 70s at 6". I love my 5x8 coil but I think the 8.5x11 is going back on just for this site.....that extra smidgen of depth might change things.

Sounds like a nice haul, congrat an HH!

Update: swapped out the 5x8 for the 8.5x11. I went over half the yard and here's what I came up with along with about 4 dollars in clad

Nirros,
I am also hunting a church yard from the same time period with an AT Pro and 8.5 x 11 coil. I have found a little over a dollar in clads and memorial cents. Some of these were inches deep. I have yet to to find anything older than 1965. From the amount of trash I'm digging it looks like it hasn't been detected. I'm at a loss to understand why there is not not any old coins here. I have hunted it twice so far. I see you were successful on your last visit, Doi you have any tips.......G

That badge is sensational! Details on the ring?

The silver was around 7 inches deep . The badge was 10 inches but in a little strip that I ran out of time to detect on my first out. I am getting a lot of foil and tab singles which I will dig this fall when ground has time to recover. I have gone parallel to the church on one side and will start going perpendicular next time. If I were to dig everything I would be replacing the lawn...lol. my advice is slow down .....dig definate hits the first couple times and a few iffy signals just to see what your detector is telling you at different depths. 1935 buffalo is my oldest

Coin so far but I'm sure I will get older targets later this year when I sniff out those faint signals.

Oh the ring has a penguin with hat on it.....its a crackerjack or gumball machine ring .

I'm going through the same thing! I've been pulling clad coins out of the ground at anywhere from 2-10 inches, and NO silver! I can't see how the newer clad coins get so deep?:dontknow:

that was my head scratcher.....I thought for sure the yard had been reworked but I was told no. what I did find was that around 9 inches there seemed to be a layer of slag .....thats actually a good sign where I am but leads me to believe that in the 60's or 70's or even early 80's a new layer of top soil was layed down.......slag is usually around 5" here. who knows ......I will know eventually where the really old stuff is whether it be in the ground there or not there at all

Well after chatting for a bit with the owner he told me they had church carnivals in the side yard in the 60s and 70s with games and such. I explain that I have areas with numerous hits but I didnt want to tear the lawn up.....his answer.....GO FOR IT! He said he doesn't have any problem whatsoever with me digging up what I can. Btw I found part of a horse bit in the back.....I will keep you all updated.

That was around the same day he went off on others posts...

went back yesterday and made one sweep up and one back to the car before my legs got bad. about 70 feet each way and i pulled out 3 quarters, 2 nickels, 7 pre 83 lincolns, 6 wheats , a 64 rosie , and another little carnival ring. The next line will be a digging frenzie as i marked the area that had 20 solid hits in a 10' area and decided to check with owner before I dug so many holes.

Well I went back again today....I could only make one path up and 1/4 path back.....a lot of digging and no trash....this pic is todays haul. Wheats on left pendant then all the other coins....mostly 60's and 70's lincolns. About 90 feet in 2 hours and my legs were toast
