1883 coin... "roman" on one side

1883 coin... "roman" on one side

I found this coin tonight and just need a little assistance id'ing it... Dated 1883, crest on back and bearded man facing to the left on front.. Believed to be from a shipwreck off the coast of ft lauderdale.. I don't have a computer available... And can't post from my phone for some reason.. Please email me if you nay know what this coin may be, I can email you two pics of it! Thx all!!!

Similar, but mine is copper or bronze... The bearded man does not have his neck showing... I'm sorry for not being able to post pics... But if a member could assist, I can send pictures from my iPhone to your email and we could post it that way... I'm on a 6 day metal detecting hunt thru Florida and only have my iPhone... Thx all!!

Thanks to don, the coin has been identified!! It's a Romanian 5 bani, copper from 1883... Thanks for everything!! Currently driving thru Florida keys heading toward key west,,, wish us luck!! Will be hopefully posting another " what's it" later tonight... :wink:

The coin you found if its the one in the pic is not Roman!! Its from Spain the front says Alfonso the 12th for the grace of god 1883 and the back says King Constable of Spain 5 pesetas which is about 3 cents American. It works out at about 170 pesetas to 1 US dollar. The coin was minted in Madrid.

Hello Albert , seem to have already identified the coin as Romania (an European country now) nothing to do with the Romans.
By the way ... you do so far from Spain?

Not from Spain live in New Mexico and could read what was written on the coin!! :icon_thumleft:

How can a country named after the Romans NOT have anything to do with the Romans? :laughing9:
Romania came into existance after the Romans virtually annihilated the country of Dacia. (very short version)

But i know what you meant friend. ;D
