Re: confirmed: 1873 double-LIBERTY Indian Head
thanks bomgoat for that info...and thank you all for your comments. and, yeah mike, you got me into the hobby, but not soon enough to come home from the ski slopes with pockets full of silver, as you like to remind me. often.
the rim is, as you can see, the victim of some corrosion, right below the date. then a tiny spot on the reverse rim. otherwise it's pretty sharp. I know it'll never fetch the price of an un-dug coin, but still, I never thought I'd find anything this rare.
here's a blurb from coinfacts.com:
"Presently only 122 examples of the 1873 Double LIBERTY are reported, mostly in lower grades. The 1873 Double LIBERTY is the most dramatic variety of the Indian Cent series, and one of the top varieties in all of United States numismatics. Most advanced date set collectors desire to include an example in their collection, not unlike how the 1955 doubled die is included in top quality Lincoln cent collections. Because of this collector demand, the values of this variety have increased dramatically over the past 10 years."
now to get it slabbed...but do I get it professionally cleaned first? I hate to have it sealed with that little bit of dirt on the back, but I don't want to touch it.
