Wow. It sure looks like a double liberty. In the pics it looks like you can see at least part of the diamond shapes on the ribbon. If so it would grade about Very Fine to Extremely Fine. In VF that coin books for $1,200 in EF $2,400. A dug coin is going to be worth less than a nondug one but it is still a super nice coin. :hello2:

seriously you guys are nuts on coins :o

Re: Is this what I think it is???

Wow, thanks everyone for your responses. Woke up this morning with an overwhelming urge to get back into those woods today!

I haven't taken new pictures of the coin, but I really have no doubt, the doubling is SO strong, even without magnifying. The reverse of this coin is as beautiful, if not more so, than the obverse. I know it won't grade super-high, and PCGS will probably say "improperly cleaned" and "environmentally damaged", but I'm going to send it out regardless. By far the best thing I've found after 7 years of detecting.

Thanks again, hopefully I'll be posting a picture of a 1916 D Merc later today........

I Think PCGS don't grade dug coins.. I could be wrong... might want to call/email ahead before shipping

They will grade high-rarity varieties, but will mark them up as environmentally damaged, etc. If they do reject it, you can send it to NGC or ANACS.

Update: 1873 double LIBERTY IH

Just got back from a local coin dealer who I trust, and he definitely confirmed that it's a double-strike. He suggested ANACS to get it graded, since PCGS doesn't care much for grading dug coins.
