Wow! Splendid find!
If I came across that at a yard sale, the owner may not know much about it but he would say it is from 1854 so it has to worth a lot of money, such as $500. But I could dicker him down to $495. That is the kind of deals I typically find.

I'm not sure if they even knew what it was. I knew right away when I saw the date. Any idea what it would be worth since its engraved?

Sweet find, congrats! :occasion14:

That's keeping your eyes open! Congrats!

Sweet deal for you!

Nicely done, and all the best,

Lanny

I wonder if it de-values the coin, or maybe makes it worth more? I don't know much about love tokens or engraved coins.
It would devalue the item as a coin itself, because it is no longer an original coin, but it would be worth the gold bullion value. On the flip side, a collector of Love tokens may pay a premium price for it.

Kind of a bummer, looks like it was in good shape before it was engraved. But I've seen some love tokens go for pretty good money.

Generally it loses it's value, compared to the grade of the coin (if high grade), especially in gold.
But like any art form, it's in the eyes of the beholder, so some tokens with commercially unusual art work that is not the norm. (ie. a picture that crosses various collecting boundaries & not just letters) Holds a good value. Your's is fairly typical & not out of the norm, so has limited appeal. In it's favour is that it's in Gold instead of the more common silver versions, so that helps the specialist collector.

Looks like someone may have converted it to use as a Watch Fob.
probably when it was still worth a dollar.

looks like right now {Today at 05:34 AM.}gold melt value is $86.22

though Altered Slightly on Weight. Still a tidy Sum :coffee2:

That's a good buy for sure, well done. Every once in a while a person hits a sale that stands out.
What is puzzling is the coin is on a ribbon bar-like it was a award for something back in the day.
The script is pretty fancy-too much for my eyes to figure out what they are actually.

Yes, almost like it was given as a medal, which makes me wonder what was it for? Probably never know, I'm going to keep in in my coin collection as is, with the ribbon still attached.

Now that is a great garage sale find!
