I invited RWSNC (Bob) to MD with me today. We hit an 1830's house in town that turned out to be a waste of an hour. It had been detected before we were told, and all we found was some clad. :'(
We then moved on to the plantation house I've been working. Bob went one way, and I finished my 2nd gridding of the front yard. I found a gold plated ring, coin purse latch, and a wheat.
I then started gridding off the side yard. I hit a musket ball right by the side of the house, a few more wheats, and a beautiful
Catholic pendant with "1830" on it right at the base of an oak tree. (Sorry Mirage, you missed it Buddy ;) ).

RWSNC was hoping for some silver coins today, (me too) but it was not to be. He did score a nice large thin button though that I think may be Colonial. It has a neat primitive stamped design on the front. "Congrats Bob".

I'm sure there will be more old coins to be found, but I'll have to work for them now since I'm almost done with the yard. Next stop, the other two pasture areas.

Today's finds.

*Beautiful Italian Catholic pendant with an "1830" date on it.
Can anyone translate the meaning of these words?
Do you think this is actually from 1830, or is there a reason that date is on this religious pendant?

*Gold plated ring. Ladies or kids?

*Wheats - 1912 , 18 , 56D

*Musket ball

*Old fork - Age?
All I can make out on the back is "Schaeffe". Any ideas on this one?

*1997 vaccine tag.

*Long lead piece that is folded in half and each side has a hole that lines up. No idea on this mystery item?

*Coin purse latch

*Two pieces of "what's it"? When I dug them up, the black piece (brass) was fitted on top of the brown (copper) piece.
Any guesses on this one? (besides "junk" that is ;) )

Thanks for looking,
MM

Nice pendant, Doug! You are bound for another silver quarter, but with a date of 1875. ;)

Keep the fever high, man!

Thanks Kyle.
I think the horses are guarding them in the pasture. ;)
I'll get em'. ;D

I don't think the 1830 pendant is actually from 1830. I have seen them before, and I just can't grasp the true date.

Dang it. :'(
I knew it was too good to be true. ;D
Thanks Kyle.

Well, it's a nice pendant to be sure. It could be from the year 1830, but more likely it commemorates an event that occurred in 1830. Pope Pius VIII died that year, but I don't see the relevance of the pendant. It shows Mary, and says something like; "Queen concieved without original sin". Or something like that. I'm sure someone around here will give you a better ID, again thanks for sharing.

Thanks John.
Where's that Nick P. character when you need him? ;D

Hope you guys stayed dry.

More excellent finds, but it appears you were the next one to start popping quarters on your last visit there.

Nice work and pics.

Thanks for sharing ;D

Thanks Bill.
I felt bad Bob didn't get one today, but I've been over the yard already and have pulled up a lot of the silver. I'm sure there will be more, but just a bit harder to find.

Great treasures AGAIN MM!!!
You never cease to amaze me with you continuity in finds.

Thanks Ty.
I love these old properties. There is such a variety on them, you never know what you'll dig next. This place should keep me busy for a lot of the year.

I found this info on the meaning of the words on the pendant:

"This is Latin for "Queen conceived with original sin", and probably has "ora pro nobis" - or "O.P.N." - which is Latin for "Pray for us". Usually in English this is translated "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee"...

And some more on the 1830 date:

"Explanation of the Miraculous Medal:

On the one side, Mary is standing upon a globe, crushing the head of a serpent beneath her foot. She stands upon the globe, as the Queen of Heaven and Earth. Her feet crush the serpent to proclaim Satan and all his followers are helpless before her (Gn 3:15). The year of 1830 on the Miraculous Medal is the year the Blessed Mother gave the design of the Miraculous Medal to Saint Catherine Labouré. The reference to Mary conceived without sin supports the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary—not to be confused with the virgin birth of Jesus, and referring to Mary's sinlessness, “full of grace” and “blessed among women” (Luke 1:28)—that was proclaimed 24 years later in 1854.

Thanks for the info. Neat find for sure.

Yeah... I couldn't compete with Doug, the human treasure vacuuming machine, but I enjoyed the day. That was the longest detecting day that I've had in a long time. We were out for around 5 or 5 and a half hours. Whew.... I'm tired.

I only found a couple pennies, including one 1957 wheatie.

Here's that button that Doug mentioned.

Thanks Bob. I usually hunt for about 6 hours or more on a Saturday. I'm addicted. ;D
That button you found is a beauty! Out of my whole collection, I don't have one like that. You're has no back mark, but a design on the front.
I usually dig buttons that have a back mark, but are flat fronts with no design.
Hopefully someone here will ID it for you.
"Buckles and Crusader, where are you?" ;D

It was nice to finally meet you today.

Same here, Doug. The next time I see you, I'll give it to you.
I don't have room for buttons in my collection box. I only have room for silver and needless to say.... I have LOTS of room left. ::)

The button could be a Tombac, spunback type from late 1700's, hard to tell from the photo, but if it is very smooth to the touch, cleans easily and has concentric rings on the reverse side, than that is basically what it is. A large majority of tombac types have designs etched on them, usually they are very hard to see unless the button is cleaned thoroughly and they never have a backmark on them. :)

Added: attached one of my prettiest Tombacs I have found :)
