Tonight I found my oldest coin ever an 1816 One Half Reale . At a location I and others have hunted to death for years . It was in a spot worn away by erosion . It was not much more than an inch deep . I was using an F-75 . One reason it may never have been found is because there is lots of trash there and an underwater metal drainage pipe nearby .

Oh that is an awesome coin. If you don't mind me asking. What mode were you using? You said you had the F-75, were you in Discrimination or All metal motion mode? De or Je mode? I have the F-75 an am learning everyday about it. Just like to see how other people are using it.

I can tell you Romeo is using it to try and hit the deep stuff I find. ;D

Over all it's working pretty good.

Hi zaxfire 69,
Dont mind at all , I was in the discrimination mode , and using De mode . I never use notch so that stays at the number ! .
The F-75 is a great detector , the more you use it the more it will amaze you . You made a good choice .

Hey George, I've said it once so i'll say it again VERY VERY nice, you deserve it bud.

That it is a sweet find there! I found an awesome 1791 Spanish one real in June of this year. Those Spanish wilvers are always suuuuuper great finds!

Keep that Colonial fever high, buddy!

George, Great Find ... a REAL Beauty .... seems you need to hit that spot some more.

I'm really liking what i read about the F75. I'm mostly into beach hunting but I still think it might get some deeper jewelery and coins. Gotta sell a couple of my prize rings first.

What I'm gathering from the "special" finds like yours and Capt'n SE's is this: it's proximity to trash or pipes that has enabled great finds to remain unfound ... until the right person comes in with the right machine. A valuable lesson I think.

Big Congrats for being the Right person with the Right machine.

George,

Awesome find, no matter what the origin of the coin is. Congrats! - Jim

That is an awesome find George
Great hunt my friend.

Congratulations George and welcome to TNet. I have to agree with Iron Patch although I have no solid evidence to say it, but with that lettering so crooked and the date being all over the place, among some other obvious differences, I have to say it sure looks like a counterfeit, which makes it more of a collectible I would think than a standard Half Real.
Since it looks like silver, I assume it is solid silver, so if you get a chance weigh the coin. It should be in that condition about 1.6 grams minimum, if lighter than most likely a counterfeit.
I have one from the early 1800's that is without a doubt counterfeit, since the silver is peeling on the edges (plated) on the coin over a base metal. :) Either way a nice coin, and would look good in any collection.

As Romeo stated the term Reale does not start until you have a 2 Reale. (Half Real, One Real, Two Reale, Four Reale, Eight Reale.) :)

Can you think of a good reason a silver counterfeit would be made? Just to cheat weight seems to be the only answer I can come up with.

If you guys want to push your Real/Reale lecture you'll be doing a lot of correcting.. including me! :D I always use reale (for 1/2 real & 1 real) as do most others.

My first thought when I saw the post was that something was amiss. Like the others have said, it is a great find either way!

Congrats!

LOL, if your bud Romeo can say it correctly that you can. :tongue3:

Besides it is one less letter to type

Cool find. You deserve it - to have the confidence that you could go back to a place that has been pounded and still find something. :icon_sunny:

It's interesting how a counterfeit back then would be worth less but now is worth more!

Nice find! For what it's worth that is a half real as apposed to a half reale. Reale with an "e" is the plural...

Now you tell us - after everyone (well not everyone  ) on this forum incorrectly uses it for months! :D

But wouldn't a half real always be counterfeit? :D :D :D

Actually Iron Patch , half real would be counterfit but the other half would be real ,so in reality I would end up with a 1/4 Real . Being that the remaining 1/4 Real is not cut into quartered pieces this is a coin that doesn't exist so therefore I have an unreal Real that doesn't exist . Then there's the question of is it Real or Reale , this is becoming all to unreal to me . Using the term " I think therefore I am " as a premise for existence , the coin is , but does not think , so it exist's only in my imagination and therefore does not have it's own reality . Thank you for a thought provoking concept . Thanks also to all who have and will be participating on this thread . I took your advice and put it on the Cob Forum .

H H to all ,
George
