Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
I got out for a short hunt with my buddy and was not expecting to find one of these, though I did not know what one of these was. I got home and a little research told me that it is a 5 sol token that was minted in 1792 to commemorate the taking of the Bastille during the french revolution two years earlier. It was originally minted to be used as currency but the new french government would not allow it to be used as such. The coin is huge and made of solid copper. I also got two silver rosies, 1 silver washington, some wheaties, buttons, toy gun, and a marble.

I am not sure if I should try to clean it any more than I already have. Any suggestions?

Hydrogen peroxide soak with a little brushing. Then a little dish soap rubbed around to get some of the green residue off. And see where that gets you.

I assume you would be ok with losing the green?

Thank Iron Patch, Ill give it a try. I might do a short soak and see where that gets me. I dont want to loose all the patina.

Then soak it, brush it, but when you take it out just set it to dry... no soap or even water, and the patina will usually come back once dry.

Don't want to recommend anything that might damage the coin, but would aluminum jelly work on it?
Obviously works on button gilt, but coin?
Killer find!

Only if he wants to strips all the green... and that stuff is pretty harsh. The peroxide will do the same thing to a degree, is much safer, and gives you the option of keeping the patina. There doesn't seem to be much gilt left.
