I had a amazing hunt today with some friends at a new cellar hole property. We all did very well and all went home with old coppers and old silvers. My find of the day and i still cant believe i found one is a 1778 mexico city mint 8 reales. I never thought i would get one of these. It was a good signal but i had to work for it under tree roots. I knew what it was though as soon as it. It is in great shape and the pictures donโ€™t do it justice at all. Thanks for looking! [emoji2][emoji106]

Iv'e seen people metal detecting for years and years in america and some of them never find a uncut 8 Reale in their lifetime so this is an Awesome find!

I believe it. Slim chances ill come across even a cut piece myself. In around 5 years or more detecting in some really nice old virgin spots Iโ€™ve only managed a half real and one real coin. Both were not in great shape at all but at least got my oldest silver. 1737! [emoji2][emoji106]

The 8's unfortunately are so big and beautiful that they couldn't be easily lost. But never say never. A few years ago I found a 1830's Mexican 8-R. Then last year I dug a 1832 5 franc which is the equivalent weight/size of an 8. Either way, you certainly have the talent to find another!

Anyway, I hope your beautiful coin makes banner. It's certainly worthy

Wowzers! :occasion14:

I remember your great silver finds. They are awesome. Its part of the fun wondering where the coin has been and how it got there. Thanks again! [emoji2][emoji106]

No problem. It looks great! [emoji106]
Maybe someone else will post there โ€œBIG 8โ€ on here too! [emoji2]

Dont have to ask me twice to post up my favorite "BIG 8" found this one in jan. 2016. This is the second year of minting, and the first 2 years all sank in the 1733 spanish galleon fleet disaster here in the keys. 1732,1733 are the rareist of the pillar and globe eights. And ya there big aren't they !!photo.JPG

And yup thats a fat cob 8 in the last pic, that was in the same hole as the pillar eight. Still trying to top that day !!! 26.7. Grams of king Phillip's silver. We might need a big 8 thread because I never get tired of looking at them !! I want one like yours now kiddo. Theres a wreck down here called the pillar dollar wreck that still has some carlos/big nose dollars on it, but its against the law to go get them. Really sucks to know that there right in my back yard and im not allowed to go get them.

Beautyโ€™s for sure. Your 1733 cleaned up well. What method did you use to clean it? Mine was good enough to keep just the way it is i think. Thanks for posting. I hope more people put theres up to see them all together in one thread. On this site they might seem common to find but in reality i think its very very low odds to ever actually find one! I use the boiling water with baking soda poured over the tinfoil wrapped coin. I had to repeat the process about 15 times, but eventually all staining was removed. Its a safe, non abrasive, and effective method. After about 5 cycles my coin looked a lot like yoursphoto-28.JPG. But after 5-10 more treatments it was all the way back to in the white condition. Its re toning nicely now. Dont see to many posted and its a big scratch off on the bucket list. I would love to see them all in one thread too. Congrats again kiddo !! I want a big nose so bad I can taste it !!! Awsome find man !!

I notice the different edge design on your one too. Very cool. My dream is to find a gold coin someday but this will do nicely on the bucket list for now. For fun i wonder what the ratio for gold coins found in total are compared to complete 8 reales found in total by detectorists. Im thinking more gold coins are found in general because of the amount of areas and time they were in circulation compared to these! [emoji2]

This is my white whale gold coinView attachment 1513410 never found a gold coin either, but these beauties live down here and I will continue searching even though odds are against me. The edge of the early pillar dollars is designed after the laurel leaf and ive also herd it called a tulip leaf design. Either way it was developed to stop shaving or scraping the edges of coins in an effort to curtail this type of stealing/smuggling. Your edge design was the first thing that caught my eye. I wonder what year they changed the design?? Im not even sure how many different edge designs there are on these 8s. Whitey keevan managed to scoop up 12000 pounds of big nose 8s off the " el cazador " wreck. Im still amazed at the thought of 6 tons of these coins. Wow!! Gold versus silver 8s hmmmmm......interesting. good question maybe someone can enlighten us on the numbers. A lot of design work and craftsmanship went into these coins. They just dont make money like that anymore. The coins of today would never last as long as our beauties did.

Did you see the professor's nova !!! Wow its a beauty too !! Lots of great finds this time of year !!!
