I had a little time this afternoon and decided to go scout an area that is close to where I found my Rev War era Dandy button the other day. I walked a long way following a stone wall and came to a clearing on a knoll that looked like it would have been a great place for a home. Turned on my T2 and got a very nice signal right off the bat. Looked at my lonely left hand and sadly there was no digging tool in it. I left it in my truck, and yes I am a huge idiot. :-) and I'm well aware of this fact. So I made the walk of shame back to my truck and retrieved my digger. At this point I decided to walk down to where I found the Dandy. I swung on my way across the field and dug a couple of signals along the way. Found what I think is an old bell and also some sort of curved buckle.

Eventually I got down to my spot and got a nice signal that I dug and out came a very ugly green coin that I figured was either a wheat or an ih. It turned out to be the ugliest damn indian head on earth. :-)

I decided to scan on the very edge of a steep embankment that goes into a huge bay. Got a nice signal and dug a decent sized coin that I couldn't see any detail on. Didn't think much of it and put it in my keeper case. Scanned that area again and right beside it got another good signal. Same sized coin with no detail. Was I happy when I got home and dipped them in some hp and after a minute could see GEORGIVS. Knew I had a kg and figured the other coin may be as well. Sure enough it was. Both kg 2s. One is a Brittania and I thought I saw 1761 but am not sure. It's gonna need some more work. The HIBERNIA on the other hand is a 1760 with great detail for a copper in my area. By far my best detailed colonial and I could not be happier. This season is off to a great start and I hope it continues. Thanks for looking. All the best, Abr

Thanks guys. It's strange that the Britannia that was obviously lost at the same time has so much less detail. Our soil is normally not kind to old coppers. As displayed by the Indian heads :-)

Well done AHAB

Very nice coins...I had a Irish 1/2 penny last week....IP dated it 1776 or 75...forget now.

Keep posting the goods !!!

PS...you will need better than that !!!

I guessed 1775. 1776 is possible, but since it looked like a 3 I was thinking probably a 5.

Oh I'm just getting warmed up buddy! This is my least interesting site :-) Not gonna lie though I'm pretty psyched to have a nice looking colonial copper. I'm sure that 1652 shilling is waiting at one of my early sites

The more you detect the more you'll see things that contradict what makes the most sense. We see it all the time with buttons... you can find a completely rotted one right beside a beauty, and both were probably lost at the same time. Heck that is the case for some brass Rev War military ones we find... one site in particular I dug one that was just fair day 1, and then he dug one that was completely toasted, and then on day 2 I found one that was in fantastic condition. These were all the same button, all lost at basically the same time, and all within about 40 feet or so of each other.

The huge factor in digging that MA silver is getting on a site that's old enough. You start posting some of the type of finds the VA guys do, and I think you'll have a great chance.

Nice coppers, Ahab! I nice silver from that era is coming your way soon.... I can feel it.

Oh I hope you're right. That would be GREAT!

I have a couple of mid 1600s sites lined up so there is a slight chance. The site I really want to get to is owned by the grumpiest old man on earth. He has a huge iron gate at the end of his long driveway. Tons of cameras everywhere and enough signs to make it very obvious he hates all of us lil people. But I'm gonna get to him somehow. It's a 1630s site that was occupied for 50+ years. Three big buildings on it. The son of these people was a very very interesting man indeed. I will pm yup about him. He has a connection to your area as well.
I guess in detecting you can throw out common sense when it comes to condition. My LCs always SUCK!!!!!!!!

That definitely sounds like a primo spot. Serious age, but just as important, occupied for many years. The best fields I've ever hunted were always like that... only just not quite as old. In a weird way sometimes too old can hurt ya a bit because it rules out so much of the good stuff that's out there to find, but just the age makes it fun to hunt. French is the oldest we have here, and most times it's pretty basic what turns up, but I know if I ever have a chance at a Mass silver it will be the place. Your 1600s sites will no doubt be British finds, and that should make it a bit more interesting. What both do have in common would be Spanish silver!

Just did a bit of work on the HIBERNIA and calling it good now. Also wanted to show that ih that I thought was lost forever. Left it in hp all day. Figured what the hell, can't be any worse. Amazingly, it is cleaning up nicely. Think I might need to pull out some old ones and put em in the drink!

That looks perfect. Kept the nice green color and lost the corrosion. Coppers will take a whole lot of hp soaking, and I even question if you could hurt a solid coin.

I don't believe you can. You can certainly lose detail due to removing the contrast of green or dirt. But I don't believe you can hurt a solid coin. And I personally don't care to have a bunch of filthy old coins laying around :-)

Thank you guys. Hopefully some old silver soon. I seem to be an old copper magnet. Where the hell is my silver anyway. :-)

Those are some great coppers, Abe. Love the harp on the Irish halfpenny. I would be really proud of those finds. Continued success as the winter ice melts and gives you back your favorite spots to hunt.
