I found what gave me the impression of ballast in the shape of the bottom of a ship in about two feet of water today as I was strolling on a sand dune by the ocean. I snooped around the rocks, and found what looked like a green beer bottle. I thought to myself: "oh great, litter bugs again." then noticed it was slightly larger then your average beer bottle. I glanced on the bottom, and it said:"J.L & C.L.C 1754". About twenty feet away was a mostly submerged large wooden barrel, standing upright, with about 12 inches sticking out. I'm going to go back to the area this week to snoop around some more, this time with my metal detector and digging gear! I'd post a pic, but my wife is gone on vacation and took the digi-cam with her.

If this is the same island as your 1822 rock carving, you may have something going!

Nope, not the same site (about 200 km apart). That other site is put on hold until the mosquitos and blackflies back off. This site is actually related to an earlier post I had in "Shipwrecks", called "sunken pirate ship found". As it turns out, that ship I had found is not the pirate ship I had been seeking, but something else, and I will deal with it some other time. This ship I found is one of two ships that had been attacked and sank by the First Nations people. I now know approximately where the other ship is as a result of this find, since the history books give a pretty good indication as to where she lies, if you can read between the lines. That will be a project for next summer.

hi stroover. i hope that the bad weather is not too bad or there will be a large tidal shift and there will be a go chance that your 2 ship wrecks will be swept away. lost in davey jones locker.i would hate to see a chance go by and hoping for you!!

Well, it's 7:12 am and the sun is out. The weather forcast is calling for sunny with a chance of showers and/or thunder with 1mm of rain, so that sounds good. The only thing is that though the winds are predicted to only be 15 km/h, they'll be blowing in from the North East. That's both good and bad: good because the wreck will be protected from the waves as I hunt, bad because NE winds are usually the precursor to bad weather in those parts, so I'm going to take a chance and head out, but probably only for the day and not stay overnight. I'll be leaving here shortly, and should be at the site in about 3 hours. I sure hope I don't come back empty-handed. I could always bring back the barrel, but I have no doubt it would fall apart as soon as I got the sand out from around and in it. Might try anyway, though. Keep it soaked in a tub of water (I was planning on brining that anyway, just in case I find another bottle and this one is still corked with booze in it).
Later gang! ;)

hi shroover.you know that there are 2 shipwrecks and you going sailing in bad weather that could get dangerous.don,t go wait for a nicer day.

I never heard that one before. Is that the fighting song for the University of Wallamaloo? ;D ;D

The one like that I heard was:

99 bottles of beer on the wall,
99 bottles of beer,
take one down and pass it around,
98 bottles of beer on the wall.

98 bottles of beer on the wall.........

Ok, I'm back! Still alive, still no treasure (at least in terms of gold and silver).
Sorry for the delay. We set sail as planned, was a little rough, but just as I expected, once we reached the barrier island we were sheltered from the wind, thus also the breakers (waves). We started working around the wooden barrel. Found some old broken bottles, some kind of hook, a sharpenning stone, some wooden wreckage, and a couple of bones. One looked like a piece of human rib (it was quite black and the marrow was almost mineralized) while the other, though also old, didn't look quite as old and may or may not have been human. I turned that one in to the police, just in case. The policeman said "I'm not sure if it's human or animal yet, but whatever it is, it's been dead for quite a long time. I don't think we need to worry too much about it" and threw it in the trash! Whatever! Once the tide gave way we spent some time around the ballast. I was getting lots of hits with my md, but it was all junk (by junk, I mean more recent trash either thrown overboard by nasty nowadays humans, or washed-up fishing equipment like lobster traps). Then the sky started turning scarry, so we head back before the storm hit. We moored just in time, too! I have all the stuff soaking in a water solution to treat it (especially the wood) for later use. I didn't get the camera develloped yet, but as soon as I do I'll post the pics for you guys. If the weather cooperates, I'll try to make another run there next week. As for getting that barrel out of there, ain't gonna happen! I'm gonna either need a VERY low tide or a gap-vac to suck the sand out from in and around it. That sucker must be 4 feet high, with 3 feet stuck in the sand! I only managed to dig no deeper then 2 feet, as the waves kept re-filling my work, despite having built a make-shift levy to block the waves (rogues) once the tide got low enough.

You say the police threw away a bone without doing any checking...and after admitting he wasn't sure if it was human...hmmmmm

hi shroover,i have chewed my fingers off ,waiting for the pics.please don,t take tooooooooo long i will have no arms left ;D ;D ;D

tinpan still chewing ;D ;D ;D

I see this story is stilling moving along.

It's a good one and hope to soon see the bottle. It would definitely add interest if we could get a look at it. That's most likely the treasure of that site.

I doubt that barrel has any connection with the bottle. In my years of experience with shipwrecks I never heard of an intact 18th century barrel found in the ocean. I've seen lots of encrusted hoops but never a barrel shaped artifact. In fact, the barrel is most likely not much over 50 years old.

Any pieces of eight would most likely be far removed from the bottle/barrel site. I'd guess 1 to infinity miles off shore in 20 feet of sand.

But, hang in there..who knows what will float up ;D

I give up, folks. I've been trying for over an hour. Can anyone give me instructions on how to take pictures off a CD and shrink them so I can put them on here? Or can I email them to someone so they can do it?
