1754 bottle

I found what gave me the impression of ballast in the shape of the bottom of a ship in about two feet of water today as I was strolling on a sand dune by the ocean. I snooped around the rocks, and found what looked like a green beer bottle. I thought to myself: "oh great, litter bugs again." then noticed it was slightly larger then your average beer bottle. I glanced on the bottom, and it said:"J.L & C.L.C 1754". About twenty feet away was a mostly submerged large wooden barrel, standing upright, with about 12 inches sticking out. I'm going to go back to the area this week to snoop around some more, this time with my metal detector and digging gear! I'd post a pic, but my wife is gone on vacation and took the digi-cam with her.

If you don't want to go back to that location let me know where it is :o

How do pieces of eight sound? :o

I'd get on that puppy like NOW!

I agree with Badger - there's no way I could have walked away with a bottle dated 1754 in my hands knowing there was a mostly submerged barrel nearby. I'd have used my teeth to dig in the sand if need be to see what was in there!!

Get back there ASAP and let us know what you find!!!!!!

I mostly agree with all of you guys, but the thing is the place is an island and I don't have a boat, so I have to "hitch" a ride, as it were. Plus, I live 100 miles away (not that THAT is such a big deal). I was just there for the weekend visiting my sister and her husband, and we decided to go to that beach for the day with their friends. I didn't have my m.d. nor anything to dig with. I started digging with my hands around the barrel, got a couple feet deep then the tide was comming in and kept re-filling my work. The barrel seemed like it would fall apart as soon as it lost it's surroundings. My plan is to head back there on the weekend and camp out there, so I can have lots of time to play around the tide and not have to worry about my ride leaving. I'll let you know how it went.

You are my new hero and I will live vicariously through you. You must get back to the ship, in my deranged state of treasure lust I feel that there is gold and silver coins laying all over the place out there!!!! Make it happen!!!

(Congrats on the shipwreck find, you really never know what you're going to find in a situation like that, the bottle alone leads me to think that people haven't hunted it to death. If you found it, others will, too. Get back as soon as you can, and thanks for sharing)

Whew - from the tone of your first post, it had sounded like you just decided not to mess with the barrel but come back at a later date and see what you could find. I'm SO glad to hear that you tried and had absolutely valid reasons to have to leave (I would have had to question your sanity if you had just walked away :P).

That said - get back there asap and definitely tell us the story of some incredible finds!!! I too am planning to live vicariously through you!! Good luck!!

Hell with digging the barrel for now. Cut the top out, get the goodies if there and secure them, then get the old wood. The barrel could disentegrate trying to remove it whole and scatter the valuables in the sand. Just my definitely inexperienced 2 sovereigns worth.

A cordless drill and jigsaw with plenty of spare batteries? Prybar, axe?

Definitely save all the wood possible.

Huge Congrats on this discovery! Pleeeeeeze keep us posted.

Wow! Can't wait to see what you come up with. (I'd be calling in sick to work)!

ME TOO! :o

And gotta have a pic! ;D

We need to see it! Sounds like the site of a life time. If it is that age ,I might give you a few bucks for it. :) I have been collecting bottles sence I was a kid. Congrats on the find.

Man I can just see that site when I close my eyes! Heck, I can even see it now with them open! :o

That rounded bottom ballast bottle sticking half out of the sand and nice old brittle cask of grog sitting nearby! Oh man, get the smelling sauce...I need it now! :o

Sounds almost like one of Kidd’s caches! Watch out for them what “guard the treasure.” They be ruthless evil spirits!

Can’t wait to see some pictures!

I’ll be a stickin to this thread like a fly to flypaper.

that bottle sounds awsome and could be a treasure its self.its not english or any of its colonies.english used a diamond on the bottom with letters for the year top to bottom and left to right.this did not start until 1842 and most bottles before that had no makers mark on them.must be made some else may be french or early america.sounds like you have something real cool and whats under the sand.congrats on your major find.wow your so lucky.i to will be keeping watch for the pic and undates on the site.good luck your going to be famous and rich ;)

If there are any bottle connaisseurs out there, maybe you can help me out: I just noticed that where it says what seems to be a company's initials, there is something interesting. It actually says this: "J.L & C*L*C", then under that is says "1754". What's interesting is, where I put "*" on either side of the L, the first one is actually a small "o" and the second one is actually a small "d", so it seems to say J.L & CoLd C", with the small o and d actually up like a degree symbol, and not a period. I tried googling it, but nothing.

As for the big wooden barrel, there is no top, and what's emerged out of the sand is badly decomposed. What remains in the sand is slightly in better shape. I'll do my best to retrieve and keep the wood.
Got all my gear ready, and now working on getting a boat ride out there for Thursday and return Saturday or Sunday. Will keep you posted.

GREAT! And if possible...can you get us a picture of that bottle? At least the stamp? I'm just really wanting to see it.

Best to you!

bumping this to the top cause it's got my curiousity going :)

Sorry guys, like I said my wife is gone until the end of the month, and she has the digital camera with her. I took some pics of the bottle today with an old-fashion kind of camera that I bought from the drug store, but still several shots to go until I can devellop them. I'm going to the site tomorrow, and I'll take a bunch of pics, then have the thing develloped on CD so I can upload to this site for y'all. K? As for the bottle, the letters and the date are not stamped on the bottom: it's more like melted into the glass, like it was part of a mold with the letters sticking out of the bottle, not inward but sticking out at you kind-of-thing.
It's supposed to rain tomorrow and Friday, but oh well. I'm going anyway. Thursday and Friday is the best time to go, as the tides will pretty much remain low for the whole two days, plus there are less likely to be people snooping around wondering what we're doing there with metal detectors and what not (they only tend to show up there on the weekend). I have my long-time treasure hunting buddy comming with me. We chartered my nephew to sail us out there. We set sail @ 11:00 Atlantic time. Won't be back until the weekend. I'll have pics for you by Sunday at the latest.
Wish me luck!
JC

Best of luck to you - I hope you have great weather, lots of fun and discover some remarkable things. If we never hear from you again, we'll all assume you hit the jackpot :)
