Never seen one like it!! Banner find for sure. huge congrats to you

That coin is just amazing...I love the chunky font, especially for the date.
And, Holy cow, a W&M and now this inside a week!?
Banner vote going in!

I'm just now reading this post and it is quite educational. Who knew that a fake could be worth so much.
In the USA, counterfeit money is confiscated and destroyed.
Quite a find.

And a big shout out to IP for always bringing clarity to these finds. I know you claim to not be an expert but your vast knowledge of such things has put a solid identification on several things that may have otherwise been misidentified or left as unknown. I appreciate and respect the fact that you tell it like it is and give respect to those funds that warrant it. I also respect that you are not afraid to disappoint somebody instead of letting them believe they have something special when they don't. And yes I just gave you a compliment lol. In all seriousness if ever I gjnd something I believe to be special or rare you and the spandex wearing super hero that gets the first email. As has already happened once....and will again next week 😜

Very nice words but I would not expect any less from my number 1 fan. :happysmiley:

Being we have a bet for a top 10 I won't mind receiving your message for "one" great find. :)

We shall call you KID IP! I didn't realize that a die was actually made and that this coin was struck like a normal coin. Really cool to think about

That's what many don't realize is the big deal in counterfeits. Cast coins tend to look ugly because of the metal that was used, and also because you're never going to see that really sharp detail like a struck coin... but the lack of interest is because there's nothing unique about it. For a struck coin the counterfeiter had to take the time to create a new die to create what was a totally new coin. And because there is two sides to every coin, and two dies needed to make it, with no rules in counterfeiting dies were often mixed and matched and that is why the counterfeit halfpennies were created into a family type system because mules of coins connect them to other coins. I can definitely see the interest in collecting these on a high level and trying to fill the gaps in your collection, but like pretty much every other type of coin if you're at the really advanced stage you need to have a fairly high budget to be a player. These things don't get the huge money some early American coins fetch, but still when you drop hundreds, or even a grand or two here and there, that sure would add up over a 100 or 200 or 300 coin collection.

Great save for sure!!! Congrats on the cool find!!!:occasion14:

Great to see a counterfeit halfpenny on the banner! Very few have made it, maybe a Machin's Mills here and there, and Hogge's also very few examples known 1783.

Again ... Awsome find. Congrats on this super coin.

Just for some general information for those who give two hoots...
The Mint report of 1787 states "only 8% of copper coinage in circulation had some tolerable resemblance to the king's coin".

I might also point out that most of the counterfeits in the colonies became accepted currency in America.

...

Congratulations!! Wonderful example of a struck cft. Haven't read the full post yet, but I will. Glad to see it up top! Hogge
