1700s coin spill! Fugios, 2-Reale, and Draped Bust!

Most ground is frozen around here, so I hit the woods on Thursday where the dirt is a little more insulated and digable. I was searching near a cellar hole, but it was overgrown and I was getting no decent signals. So, I headed away, swinging on any clear areas until I ended up on a hiking trail about a 100 feet away. I was swinging along the edge of the trail for about five minutes when I got a nice coin sound in the low 30s on the Equinox. I dug my hole and was excited to see a large copper pop out. I rescanned the hole and was still getting high tones. I expanded the hole and saw the gray edge of a coin stick out, which I knew was some sort of silver. I rescanned again and still had high tones. I ended up digging two more coppers from the same hole. When I got home, I determined the silver coin was a 1754 2-Reale minted in Mexico City, in great shape too. I next saw that I had two Fugios. Unfortunately, they are in rough shape, either because of the soil or my lousy cleaning skills. Still, the chain stands out and I can see the 1787 date. The final coin was a 1797 Draped Bust large cent. I have only found a few of these coins, and this is my first one dated from the 1700s. Pretty exciting dig for me, but total luck, of course. Beauty spill. Just goes to show how long old coinage circulated. 50-70 years wasn’t unheard of, but I tend to think that was a lost collection. I’ll vote that one in

Thanks! If this was a true pocket spill, that 2-reale would have been in circulation for about 45 years. I suppose a collection is possible, but I am thinking a contemporary pocket spill. I like to imagine the hiking path was a former cart path leading to the stone enclosed field. Maybe the coins spilled out as he was climbing onto the wagon; who knows. He must have been pretty upset when he figured out the money was lost. He sure made me happy though😁.

Thanks. I was very lucky for sure. Map research put me in the right area by a pre-1850 cellar hole, but this hit was just my good fortune on an otherwise slow hunt..

Thanks so much! I don’t find many coppers, and the ones I do find are usually slick. I love the history of the Fugios, so I wish they were perfect, but they are actually pretty good considering (especially one chain side). Only 400,000 minted, so real excited to find them. Thanks for the many kind words. It has been a week today since I dug them, and I am still so excited and grateful. I must say I have been unusually lucky lately (knock on wood). Living in New England is great for detecting if you can access the right spots. I haven’t detected Rhode Island, but I know there is lots of great history there. Thanks again. Thanks! I was shocked when I saw the first Fugio at home, and nearly fell off my chair when I saw the second. I love Spanish too, and have been incredibly lucky to find several lately. That is my best and favorite silver coin find in my nearly four years of detecting. Thanks and good luck out there.

I found a fair amount of coppers but the Fujio still on my bucket list. And I’ve seen others found and I’m telling you yours coming out of the ground like that it’s something to be proud of. We wish there were all perfect but you know the ground isn’t too kind to Copper’s. Congrats again and happy hunting!!

Very nice finds indeed.
You should plan to go back with a sifter and several buckets and dig some more all around to see what else is hiding there. Bet some other nice items are in amongst the dirt.
