Most ground is frozen around here, so I hit the woods on Thursday where the dirt is a little more insulated and digable. I was searching near a cellar hole, but it was overgrown and I was getting no decent signals. So, I headed away, swinging on any clear areas until I ended up on a hiking trail about a 100 feet away. I was swinging along the edge of the trail for about five minutes when I got a nice coin sound in the low 30s on the Equinox. I dug my hole and was excited to see a large copper pop out. I rescanned the hole and was still getting high tones. I expanded the hole and saw the gray edge of a coin stick out, which I knew was some sort of silver. I rescanned again and still had high tones. I ended up digging two more coppers from the same hole. When I got home, I determined the silver coin was a 1754 2-Reale minted in Mexico City, in great shape too. I next saw that I had two Fugios. Unfortunately, they are in rough shape, either because of the soil or my lousy cleaning skills. Still, the chain stands out and I can see the 1787 date. The final coin was a 1797 Draped Bust large cent. I have only found a few of these coins, and this is my first one dated from the 1700s. Pretty exciting dig for me, but total luck, of course. Thanks for checking out my post. Good luck out there!

That is a heck of a spill. I think all the coins look great

Just one of those constitutes a banner in my book, and you found the lot!

Thanks! I was a little disappointed in the condition of the Fugios, except for one side, but I can’t complain, as they are special coins. Besides, the few coppers I dig are usually slick.

Thanks! I was pretty psyched when I thought I had just one; four was beyond my expectations. Keep searching; they are out there. Good luck!

Yeah, imagine you now own not just 'a coin' but a collection of coins that constitute what was likely the typical pocket contents of one of the very first Americans. There are not many museums, let alone individual people, who can claim that and display it as a unified collection. These coins are certainly worth more together to a collector than they are individually.

Thanks Truth. I got real lucky on this one. It is a great feeling that I hope everyone can experience some day. Mass has its drawbacks, but there is some good detecting here if you can find the right spots. Thanks again, and congrats on your recent banner.
Yeah I know the feeling I’m not complain and I’m from a town from 1813 and I’m 50 miles from New Orleans born and raised you just gotta get those right spots although I haven’t ran across much colonial we do get our fair share of Spanish silver which I see you do too all I can say is it must be nice lol again congratulations on a epic literally once in a lifetime hunt

Wow, fantastic spill! That just doesn't happen every day. I love that 2 Reales. The Fugio is on my list, love those too.

Thanks! I hadn’t thought of it that way; interesting. I do like to imagine the circumstances under which they were lost, who last held them, and what the area looked like back then. What a great hobby!.

Thanks Truth. Lot of history in New Orleans/Louisiana, and you have dug your share. I have only recently had the good fortune to find Spanish silver. I would love to dig an 8-Reale like the ones you found. Thanks again, and good luck out there.

Beauty spill. Just goes to show how long old coinage circulated. 50-70 years wasn’t unheard of, but I tend to think that was a lost collection. I’ll vote that one in

If your willing to hunt in this weather, then you are definitely deserving of your finds.

Very nice!

Wow I can't even imagine making finds such as those, not in the Midwest and not just randomly out in a patch of woods. Empty cartdrige cases is all I could expect to find after fighting thousands of roots. You lucky, lucky man. My hat is off to you

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING thanks for sharing
