1700's belt buckle? ID? Banner item?

So was out detecting with my best detecting friend Bob. We found a secret spot sshhh.

These two items were in the same hole together and were at least 12" down. Bob can verify it for you. You can stick your arm in and it'd be past your elbow!!

So anyways, there were 2 large roots about the size of a nickle that were crossed over in an X pattern.
Sadly the only thing we could do is chop because the item was underneath it.

Pulled out this beautiful belt buckle, it rings solid Silver on our machines, so I don't know if it might be plated?
For as deep as it was and in a field with lots of old history we think it could be 1700's. Maybe a pilgrim buckle? I am hoping someone can ID this better.

The wrench is broken a bit and is real bad condition but it is old no doubt. Has a S pattern to it. Any help?

OH and the buckle latch piece moves and works perfectly, you could put it on and wear it with no problems.

Looks to be an early Art Deco style buckle...1920s...

Buckleboy is Right Here--but Romeo has already given the correct ID on this one. 1920's.

But how can that be possible being that far down, and long enough for large roots to grow over top it?

Curses!

:D

Relichunters--It is called "Confirmation Bias."  We Assume that depth equates to age.  I can tell ya right now when I've bent down to pick up a Large Cent on the surface of a plowed field that depth didn't equal age.  When landscaping is done, and Captn SE has to dig down 10 inches for a silver 1962 Rosie, depth doesn't equal age.

Another popular, but irrational metal detecting Confirmation Bias:  "Well, I found items from the 1700s there.  Only 1700s items.  I found only Colonial Coins there, so this other thing I found HAS TO BE Colonial too!"

Or try this one on for size:  "This one old coin PROVES that I've found the site I was looking for in the woods."

All of these statements are grounded on assumptions that if challenged, could prove false.

The buckle is still a cool find, even if it is not as old as you first thought--in fact, you will likely never again find or see posted on this or any forum another buckle like it.

Best Wishes,

Buckleboy

Thanks for the tid bit,i have about 6 of them like that. You assume wrong ,land can change alot over hundreds of years .People plow fields and add dirt to sites and dredge mountains of sand sometimes..What you find is what you get sometimes....You date the relics from the age of the relic  It is a cool find

No need to be rude about it. But if its under thick roots, then it couldn't have been plowed and moved because the roots would have been cut. I checked it with a magnet and its not magnetic at all on any part of it. I thank you for the ID guess, but I will take it to a historic place and get a more in depth ID of it, because I'd really like to learn more about the type it is, and what kind of people used them and the design of it and all.

Im sorry relichunter,i knew what its was. I just wanted to see what you may say ;D, i started digging on lots from the 1920s when first i started detecting....Buckleboy has to tell everyone just how to look for artifacts all the time, and some may not need the help, just the time to search.....

I guess it's not as old as we thought, But the site is a good one. The buckle is a beauty and certainly is a good find at almost 100 yrs old. We will keep looking and digging that iron!

If you get some extra time oneday ,read this book.It will help you date buttons and relics you may find in your area. When you find some that look like the pictures in the book ,you maybe in the right area to make more colonial finds. You have to start at the top and scroll down..
