Re: Is this the Oldest Coin Ever Found on Upper East Coast???

I think what you're seeing is "TOSI" from Potosi, upside-down.. could be wrong but I think its 1661

but to answer your question, had it been 1501, it still wouldn't have been the oldest.. people have found Ancient coins all over the US including your area

Definitely worth more to you. How big is it? Looks like a 1 real (nickel in size? maybe a touch smaller)

Its about the size of a Nickle i was told it was a 2 Reale but im not sure it weighs 3+ Grams. Cant give you an Exact weight my scale doesnt do decimals

Re: Is this the Oldest Coin Ever Found on Upper East Coast???

Its a 1 reale from potosi. The letters you read as 1501 are actually part of the lettering; PO"TOSI"

Re: Is this the Oldest Coin Ever Found on Upper East Coast???

Hey I put together a quick guide to cobs for ya...

this is a 1 reale, but I can't read the date. 1661 is entirely possible, the wave design was being produced then, it starts in 1649 (??????) I THINK....either way not much earlier than 1661, there are 1661 examples online with the wave...the last 2 digits of date are in the square over the wave.

ANYWAYS...

also check the assayers mark, if you can match it to this list:

http://www.melfisher.com/Library/AtochaCoin/Assayer.asp

it can help narrow down the date.

BTW, killer find

This coin actually has 2 dates that I can see. One of them is crystal clear, the 61 below the lions and castles is unmistakable.

The Crazy thing is I literally Loaded a New Deep Silver program that I Found last night cause the guy was Finding Silver dimes from 16 inches down with his Whites XLT so I Figured id give it a try and the Cob was about 9 inches down and my detector Screamed like it was a inch down. So im definally keeping this New Program as one of my FAVORITES. lol. Thanks alot everyone for all the Info on it. It really helped alot...
Ive been getting Pms with Offers to buy it like Crazy. If anyone else wants to Post a Offer for it let me know., my highest offer so far is $225 Shipped. Anyone wanna beat it???
